And still happy for the most part. About 95% of those miles are towing a 10K fifth wheel trailer. Bought the truck in Las Vegas and now we're in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Pulled over a lot of mountains and through some pretty rough patches of road. I still have my gripes with the six speed when towing. When towing in the mountains you gotta put the tranny in manual mode and shift yourself or the constant shifting will drive you nuts.
Thats exactly what I like about the new tranny that ford made it so you can drive it like a manual tranny. I live in the mountains and pull a 15k 5ver so I can understand your thoughts on this. ----- You are on my dream trip. Good luck and keep up the posts to inform us how its going. My 2011 order build date is june 21, delivery on July 4.
Got the 3.31 gears, and know I'm giving up a little with this. I loved the truck so talked myself into it. An F350 with the fifth wheel hitch prep and they put 3.31 gears in it? What sense does that make?
I had the urea filled at the first oil change. I was getting a message that there was 600 miles worth remaining which would have put it at around 4500 miles range I think.
I haven't calculated mileage because the terrain has been mountainous for the most part and wind direction makes a big difference. Most days I'm in the low 11's by the computer. 10.1 by the computer today with a lot of short steep climbs headed to Chicken, Alaska.
I'll have to investigate this lockout option when in D.
The lockout in drive works fantastic, other than you might forget to give yourself 6th gear back when you get back on a flat road.
I like driving with the range selector up (just bump the +/- once) so it shows what gear you are in, then if any hunting occurs just lock out the high gear.
I am guessing the 3.31 gears are still viable because the gearing in the trans must be low enough to get you going. Once it's rolling the gears are less "important" IMHO, since you have such a choice on the trans, like manual shifting and stuff.
I'll consider them or the next higher set when I get one. Since most of my driving is NOT done towing, go for the majority scenario.
First gear is plenty low. My truck (3.55) will make the 1-2 shift through an intersection and the 2-3 shortly after.
I have locked out a few gears and forgot. That's about the only time you hear any engine noise.
