Failed emmisions test

 New law I guess. I have a 5" exhaust and failed my catalyst test for tampering. Found out early 99's had them along with later six speeds.

Anybody have suggestions on which route to take? Magnaflow has an aftermarket 5" for about $260.

I believe the stock exhaust was a 3" and I would need 2 5" to 3" reducers and unions to run a stocker. Any help would be appreciated.

LOL! Leave my mountains for those rolling hills? I would rather buy a Prius, a tent and a bunch of Granola :pointlaugh:

If the sticker is gone I'd find out thru a vin check to see if there was a cat installed thru the factory then go from there. Somebody will let you know how to check the vin, can't remember right now. I bought mine new so I know what came on it, I know what I put on it too..:pullover:

His computer brought up that early 99's (before 12/98) need a cat. I've done some research and believe he is right. One more thing to bite an early 99 owner in the rear.

I doubt anyone has put a cat on yet but I'm afraid it's going to become mote common in the future for those who had one from the factory. If anyone has a spare one lying around PM me.

E99's had cats....stick and auto. The 01, 02 and 03 275hp six speeds did aswell. However, I did see a 02 275 hp six speed that did not have one installed when it was brand new...It was a mexican built truck, I guess they forgot to install it. LOL
As others have said, early '99s sold in the US did have the cat installed. Exaust pipe diameter into the cat and the rest of the way was 3.5 inches.
I have an early 99 build date 10/98 and mine never had a cat on it.

Early 99 here, ordered new from the dealer. Auto. NO CAT from the factory.

I have an early 99 with a ZF6 and it has a build date of 2/98 and it has a cat on it but my 99.5 and 2000 do not have a cat.

If you can weld or get some one to. Find an old one and gut it and straight tube it. Problem solved.

Everyone can thank the great state of California's majority population for repeatedly voting in the socialist dope smoking, tree huggen, mother earthers :blah: :blah: into office that got you these crazy laws we now have all over the country. These people want use pedaling bicycles and living in grass hunts.

You think it's a :badidea: to want the air as clean as possible?

I have lived in some big cities and made a decision to move to the country just to get away from the air.
AFAIK the smog laws are there to make the vehicles run as clean as they were when new, not to get them to a standard they were not designed to achieve.

Thanks for the link Ron. That is the only option I could find other than finding a used stocker. They actually make a 5" as well. I think two 5" unions and this one ought to do the trick.

i think it would be fine for a one night stand..you only need it for a sticker then take it off...

I wonder how my truck would be on them test....I have a PMT 1 PCM so there machine might think my truck is a 01 truck correct?? or do they just punch in the vin# ?

That sucks that some states have stupid laws like that. Here in NH anything that has a GVW over 8000lbs doesnt need to pass emissions or even be plugged in. I got mine inspected with my straight 4 to 5in stacks and my 02 came with a cat! Gotta love NH!

My 02, auto, 4x4 had no factory cat.

#23 ·
Well they have those specia cats but being yours was missing they might look closer at it,
They do make magna 4,5,inch high flow cats.

I'm all for running cleaner with higher power... Running a smaller cat is going to defeat the purpose of your bigger exhaust. I'd say throw a 5" on it and call it good. No sense gutting something you spent hundreds on, unless it plugs up. Which it shouldn't do.

Almost all cats have a tapered inlet and outlet. You cut the taper off right where 5" pipe will slide right through it slide it up on your pipe and weld it. it will then pass the mirror inspection and your on your way with the same exhaust system you had. Just have to find you an old cat, any of the 94-97 cats will work too.

One of the junkyards in Kennedale may have one already attached to a valve cover.

mine has one, but if your state inspector says ya need one, your gonna have trouble getting around him.

summit carries high flow magna diesel converters for 257 +/-
in a 3.5, 4, or 5" pipe

Do they really actually do anything for a diesel? I understand their use on a gasser and would never remove one. I thought that a diesel that is tuned and in good running condition the only bad byproduct in the exhaust was the soot particles. Does a CC stop soot?

#33 ·
soot and nitrogen so no they dont do much but if THE MAN says its gotta be there......then it atleaset has to look like it..but lord helpya if he looks deeper.
