04 6’0l with about 100k on it. My parents just bought this last fall and it basically went right into storage for the winter. So I don’t have a ton of history on the truck besides it was the owner of Tousley Fords truck.
My parents only use the truck to pull there small fifth wheel around(6000k).
Just got a call from my dad saying the truck started loping and loosing power. Then all of a sudden he would gain power again. Well he was able to get it back to there house and get it backed down the driveway and unhooked the 5th wheel, but know it doesn’t have enough power to pull it self. He say it will just roll out the black smoke and not move when he gives it any kind of throttle.
This truck is about 120 miles away from me and I’m heading up there this weekend to look at it for them. My first thought was IPR or maybe HPOP any other ideas.
I have done a ton of mechanical work on these 6.0l but this will be my first no start/no power.
if you have a scanner where u can datalog that would be very helpful in the diagnosis, but yes the first places i would look at are vgt duty cyle% with the scanner and icp
SOunds like to me the Turbo is sticking. I'm confused though, does it start and idle? If so its not Hpop or IPR related. If its rolling black smoke its not getting air. Check intercooler boots as well.
It starts and idles fine but the minute your give it any gas it just rolls black smoke. I wouldn’t think it could be turbo issues as it won’t even move. If it was a turbo i would think you would at least be able to drive it in till boost would normal come on.
My dad heading back up there now to check a few things so hopefully I can have more knowledge when he call me back.
sounds like you need to clean the veins on the turbo or there is something else wrong with the turbo like bad bearings that wont let the turbo spool. Can you hear the turbo spooling?
sure does sound like a lack of boost, coupld possibly be a blown ic boot, maybe blown the tank of the ic, just guna have to look at everything boost related, the egr valve may be hung wide open also, might try cleaning that, common 6leaker problem
if the egr is stuck and the turbo isn't boosting that would create a big problem, my buddies egr stuck on his pickup and it blew constant black smoking running down the road and getting it spooled high enough to make boost to get it goin was quite a chore, we cleaned the egr and the smoke went away and he regained power
This WILL cause a heavy amount of black smoke, loping, and no power, rough idle, and some times no start. Pretty much all the symptoms he stated. I have seen this several times first hand
Thanks guys I'm going to laugh really hard if this is EGR related because I told them before they brought it up north to have me do the EGR delete on it before they have any issues with it. They did not want me dicking with it and thought it wouldnt be an issue. I have only done about 20 EGR delete on 6.0l but they all have been blown and burn coolant have never had one with these symptoms.
Just spoke with my Dad. Had him remove and clean the EGR valve. When he took it out it was all carbonized up and stuck open. He cleaned it put it all back together and still does the same thing
Starts right up and runs fine. The min you touch the gas and bring the RPM up to 1000 it just spits and sputter and blows black smoke. I'm thinking this has got to be High Pressure oil related.
mine has been doing sort of the same, i just did an egr delete, i also just did a hpop, like in the last 5 min, haven't got it started cuz i did it on break at work, mine would rev to about 1700 then fall on its face, but didn't blow much smoke, ill let you know how mine turns out
Check the air filter and boost hoses. Black smoke means too much fuel. The only way fuel gets injected is by hp oil and elec. It's not a HP oil pump problem.
Well its fixed for now. It turns out it was the EGR valve after all. After he cleaned it and reinstalled it it would do the samething. So I had him pull it back apart and it was stuck open again this time I had him get the valve closed and leave it unpluged and see if that helps.
Truck runs perfect. I'm thinking that when it first starts up it must move the EGR valve up and down and it would stick in the open pistion so for know he's just going to drive with it unpluged intill I have time to weld up the intake for him and delete that stuipd EGR cooler.
Hell just leave it unplugged for good. Mines been unplugged and welded shut forever. Glad he got it figured out.
