I have an 03 super duty that has a chrome billet grille, it came with it stock. My question is would i need to sand all that chrome off or can i just clean it real good, primer it and then paint it glossy black?
when I painted my stock grill on my obs I just scuffed up the crome, primed it then painted it a few coats and then sprayed on a couple coats of clear coat.
yeah my obs grill was chrome, I wanna say I used 80grit, was done last summer but I know I sprayed on primer then found some green paint at auto zone that was a very close match, after a couple of coats and enough time to dry I sprayed on some clear coat.
It wasnt anything special, just some rattle can auto paint at auto zone.
Ill forgive for the countryboyroy part too lol, Im far from that slob
Best way is to glass bead or sand blast it. Just lightly. Then use a good self etch primer. After that prime it up with a 2k primer ( primer that has a hardner ) then top coat with any color you like. This way is The best way I know to get it to last. Getting a paint to match grille is much easier but most likely It will need prep to.
I know when I did the plastic paint it held longer than the standard paint. You know the one that bonds to plastic. I am still playing around with different colors and paint combanations so I am still playing on my chrome grille.
Sand blast or media blasting sounds like it would work great. May be next thing I try.
yea i dont have a sandblaster so it looks like im guna be puttin in a lot of elbow grease with some sand paper cuz im too cheap to go get it blasted
Harbor frieght has small hand held ones for like $30. In the long run it will be cheaper then sandpaper. As for plastic paints. They're all the same. It's the flex agent that some put into theirs. I'm talking automotive refinish products not rattle can.
I scuffed the hell outta mine with some scothbrite pads in my electric sander, then primed with some adhesion promoter and painted it with rustoleum paint for plastic. Had it like this for over 6 months now and it still looks good minus a few very very small rock chips.
The chrome will come off pretty easy with a scotchbrite and acetone.
I didn't know this until my second attempt.
My first attempt I just sanded it down and used bulldog adhesion promotor before I sprayed the paint and the clear.
It lasted for about a month before it started to flake off.
Instead of going through that again, the second time I scrubbed off the chrome with a scotchbrite pad and acetone. Then I sprayed it with 1 coat of bulldog, followed by this stuff: Spray Max Epoxy Primer aerosol and then the paint & clear.
The results are WAY better. The paint isn't going anywhere. I can scrape it with my fingernail and it doesnt come off like the first attempt did.
I just bought a 05?? Harley grill from Rock Auto for my Ex with the chrome inner portion. I took it out of the black surrounding piece, then to work and sand blasted the chrome off...it was my first time sand blasting, can't keep it in one spot for too long lol. The plan is to paint the inner portion flat black, the outer portion Linex'ed and then in the future linex the front and rear bumpers, rocker panels, and fender well covers. Will post pics as each phase is complete. Linex place was closed on Fri so I will have to wait till Mon.
