It has taken ten months to get resolve, but my insurance company contacted me today and in lieu of continuing to repair problems attributed to it's theft and the subsequent crappy work performed by the first repair shop, they are going to total it. Unfortunately this will leave me without transportation, a small down payment for a replacement, and very little time to to make it all happen (going out of town for a week this Sunday). A quick check in my area has returned few results for a comparable lower mileage replacement (CC LB 4x4).
Smack talk aside, would I regret a 7.3 with PMRs, or a 6.0? I am looking for something dependable that will do at least as well as my current truck (16-17 mpg highway). Currently, I commute about 100 miles each day. I don't have the resources to sink a bunch of time and/or money into a high maintenance vehicle or fixer-upper, let alone chase big power. If I can't find something decent, I will end up buying a car:doh:
I dont really know that much but from what Ive heard on the streets, I would go with a 7.3L You might get lucky with a 6.0L but you never know. Ive heard alot of bad things about the 6L and That for anything major you gotta take the body off to fix it. Ive also heard they have alot of electrical problems as well.
I sure believe in the reliable 7.3, I heard too many horor stories with
6.0s and both of my niebors with 6.0 have had head gasket problems
and nether one hoped up, just stock!
I'd get a 7.3 unless you got the funds to to an EGR delete and some other minor things to the 6.0.
As for the electrical problems, I've only had one 6.0 that I've messed with mess up electrically, and that was a bearing inside the alternator going out causing intermittent power loss. Wiring is a nightmare as usual but nothing really associated with the electrical has been major with the ones I know of down here.
If your going with the 7.3 and not looking for high hp then pmrs would be fine. If you find a nice 6.0 go for a 05-06 and run and oasis on either truck you decide on.I have both a 7.3 and 6.0. Love both the engines and plan on keeping one of each for a long time.
300,000 miles on pmr's in my 2002 7.3 and its still super reliable and gets great fuel mileage to boot.
The injectors started going out around 275,000 to 285,000 miles. But thats the only real problems Ive had other than a bracket breaking. Water pump went out at 297k or 298k I think.
As long as youre going to stay stockish the pmr's are just as good as the forged rod motors in my opinion.
^^^^:whs: But my Stock 6.0 with 176k is still running like new. The only problem Ive had is 1 Egr valve 2 Injectors @100k and She dose not like cold morings...LOL
I bought my 05 used with 49k and it currently has 93k. I have had 1 EGR valve plug up which was a 30minute fix to clean it and put it back, I have had some puking, but I attribute that to running Innovatives 400hp xtreme race file for the last 10k miles with oversized tires for the last 30k miles. I have had some cold start troubles but has never left me stranded or failed to start.
If your not looking for big power than PMR's shouldn't be a problem for ya, 7.3L has proven it will last forever, I would just check for rusty oil pan and overall condition/maintenance and go for it if your still on the fence of the 6.0's
If I had to get a different truck right now I would get a 6.0. I would do head studs, an EGR delete and put a tuner in it and drive it. You will yeild better mpg's. Just my .02
