I have been using Royal Purple in my truck for the past few months now and tomorrow I am going to change the oil again. I am honsetly tired of spending $150 on oil every time so I decided to stop using it, becasue it can't be worth it. I am just wondering what other types of synthetic oils most of you guys are using. Thanks.
Try 03psd7.3 for Amsoil. Try White Buffalo for Schaeffers. I went from 15w-40 rotatella from the dealership to 5w-40 syn rotatella to using Valvoline Extreme Blue 5w-40(syn). Seems the truck idles quieter on the Valvoline. But all three are good choices.
we run amsoil in all our fleet trucks and vans, most of them have well over 600k on the clocks (one is almost at a million). I also run it in my EX. I am sure all the oils are great, but I will never use anything else. We also run Syn in the trannies and have only replaced one in the entire fleet, and these trucks get beat on bad. They range from a couple of 1 ton vans to 17' box trucks. and they never stop moving but for a few hours during the day, and on the weekends. I love 7.3's. We even have a couple of 6.0's with 400k on them.
Is valvoline blue 15-40 a good oil to run. Im running rotella right now..oil change is comin up..and wonderin if i should try somethin new..any advice?
I ran Amsoil for over 100k in my 7.3 and then the iron went to crap. Come to find out, many other Amsoil users had the same problem. I switched to Delo 400 15-40 and my iron problem was no more and my engine looked great at 182k when I sold it. The cost of any synthetic is not worth what you get from that extra cost as compaired to the cost of Delo 15-40 and the engine protection you get. I was a real proponent and dealer for Amsoil, and still am for their 2-stroke oil, but not for diesel engines. Check out bobtheoilguy and ask around ther if yoiu want to see some real oil info.
Monk U can't go wrong with VB or Delo or Mobil Delvac. There is nothing wrong with Rotella either... I just think the top 3 have a more robust additive package. I'm a firm beleiver in Moly--Hence the reason why I use Delvac.. Delo has a fair amount of Moly added as well...During my summer oil change, I add 2 pts of Schaeffers EP Moly Treatment. My 7.3L just seems too really like this combo. Quieter Idle and better throttle response. Any of the top brand dino diesel oils will lubricate and protect your 7.3L for as long as you own it... Just don't go much past 5k miles between oil changes. And -->don't skimp on cheap filters.
I use Amsoil in both my personal truck (which I drag race and truck pull) and my company truck(97 ford and a 06 ford). I drive my company truck about 50,000 miles a year. I saw a solid 1 mpg increase and starts easy when cold and I am changing oil every 20,000 miles and filter every 5,000. The 6.0 with the Amsoil pulls better with less turbo surge.
so to me the extra cost of the oil is worth it.
ive been using castrol.. just changed my oil yesterday and started running the valvoline premium blue 10-40.. and i can tell a difference in my truck already as far as idiling goes and seems to be a little quiter now with the Valvoline...
I'd say something like Amsoil might be worthwhile if you have a quality bypass filter and can get away with the 12,000+ mile changes.
Schaeffer's is awesome. I've seen and participated in a demonstration showing shear forces on a bearing surface with various oils, and the Schaeffer's Supreme 7000 just wouldn't shear away. Couldn't get metal to metal contact. Heck, I lifted the end of the machine putting so much force on the lever handle trying to get the Schaeffer's to shear. Part of that is the high amount of Moly in the oil. And for the quality you get, the price is pretty fair IMHO.
I know it sounds stupid but we have only the stock filtration and we change the oil ever 30k with the Amsoil. The results are there over the long haul. However, none of these high mile trucks are modded either, so......
Please tell me you at least change the regular filter at much smaller intervals than that...
I run in my Camry, Valvoline SynPower and I do 12,000 mile intervals, with a supplement of Moly and a filter change every 3000 miles. PureONE filters as well, V-6 ones as they fit but are twice the size of the 4-cylinder. Call me paranoid, but I like clean oil.
Well I am not the one who is in charge of the truck maintenance, but I know for sure that they don't change the filters either, and the miles prove that for the use that the trucks get, it does not matter. I however change them all the time because I am a nervous nelly when it come to oil.
i have been using rotella 15-40 but i also used the motorcraft powerstroke oil form napa alot easier because it comes in 5 quart jugs so you only gotta buy 3 instead of buyin 3 gallons and 3 quarts and it did my engine just fine
I run valvoline extreme blue sythetic and it was night and day difference wise over the rotella regular for my 7.3.
2500 miles on the rotella and you could tell it was oil change time. 3k and you better be changing it then because the truck ran like crap. Plus when you drained it the stuff looked like roofing tar.
The valvoline cranked quicker, ran smoother and went 7500 miles with no change what so ever in the way the truck ran over the entire time the oil was in there. Also when I drained it at 7500 miles it looked like oil still. Murky but not roofing tar black like the rotella was.
Years ago I was told by the oil company i get my dyed diesel from Jt Mystic was one of the better ones for powerstrokes. They get abused by our workers I love the stuff and use their grease too. I'm in the same boat you are in as far as royal purple costs in my personal 7.3 although I have noticed a slight mileage increase with it, also use rotella in the dodges and cat 3406bs

This site has a special thread for UOA and Virgin Samples. some of the these might be old ones... some might be new... I do know Rotella contains no moly. I don't think amsoil contains any either... If my memory serves me right... Schaeffers uses the most moly then Delo then Mobil Delvac. Visit bobs site and take a look.
