pull up to the trailer and level the trailer out behind the truck, dont hook the truck up just back up to it. Then measure from bottom of hitch on trailer to the hitch on your truck!
well I havent picked it up yet, i bought it off my buddy so Im just leaving it there untill I get my brakes and stuff set up...maybe i'll have to pop by and measure up....also where can a guy pick up a brake controller?
I bought my Drawtite brake controller at Lordco. It isn't overly fancy, but that also means there is less to go wrong with it.
As for drawbar drop, I have a 6" lift and my 6" drop drawbar is about 2" too high. 8" drop would work better for the 18" high hitch on the trailer I usually tow.
The best controller I've ever had is the Genisis. It is digital and and has an inertia control in it. The more it feels the truck the more voltage it sends to the trailer. No more jerking. It's fantastic. The cheapest place I found them is an RV dealer in Mayer, Az you can search for it, I can't remember their name.
Best thing you can do is get an adjustable hitch as some trailers are bigger than others. Look at ebay for the billet ones. I got mine at harbor freight really cheap.
I ran around the wallmart parking lot with a measuring tape and measured some peopels setups on stock trucks, most seemed to sit at 22inches....mines at 27.....so I got 5 1/4 drop...should work
I run an 8.5" lift on my truck. I just bought a 29' travel trailer that has a ball top ride height of 22-23.5 inches off the ground. I had to get a 14" drop bar but used the top holes taking it to 12" drop. If you're only towing a 5000lb or less trailer and don't need load levelers, it might be different.
Even running stock, you could need a 2 or 4 inch drop so you really need to know the ball top height of your trailer and then see where your truck will be for a drop. Measure the top of the slide in bar and note the measurement from the required ball top position to that and you'll know what you need.
Good luck
Dave
