Nope not the 6.0 under the hood! Mine and the the ones of three other friends have been the picture of reliability... But every one of us have chewed threw the front rotors! What gives!
I'm seriously frustrated with the brakes on my truck! This is the third set of rotors in just over 100k. I've had two sets of Ford rotors and the latest was a set of Power Slots. The Power Slots lasted 8 months and less than 10k!
So what do I have to do to fix the rotor issue on this truck?
I don't drive crazy, mash the brakes, ride my brakes, or do anything that would over heat them.... When I tow I give a little more bias to the trailer so it helps slow me not the truck fighting to slow it. And when I hit big down hill grades I down shift and let the 6.0 slow me so I'm not riding them...
Please if anyone has this figured out I would love to hear it.... Anyone tried SSBC stuff? I'm that tired of it I'm ready to replace the whole system!
I did not put the cryo rotors on just the standard ones... They had tons of good reviews so I went with them. I would be willing to try the cryos but truth be told I'm gun shy about the Power Slots now! The stock Ford units last much much longer!
I had an 05 dually and I pull a 4 horse trailer with living quarters in it and never even put pads on it until i 130K Ive been amazed by the braking system on them. Of course mine was 2 wheel drive and set up just pull it had the perfect ride height for all my trailers im sure that has something to do with it.
I'm not sure why I'm going through them but I want to pull my hair out! I'm very proud of my truck and take care of it like nothing else but it just totally deflates you when you step on the brakes and get that bad vibration and the dash starts jumping around! Anyway its time AGAIN for new rotors. I just wish I had an answer as to why its doing this! Also like I said its not just me... Every one I know eventually gets into problems with the rotors?
I wonder if the 450's and 550's have bigger front brake set ups and if they can be retrofitted onto my 350?
How are the rears wearing? Could there be something messed up with the proportioning valve?? I know its not common but they can sometimes go bad, had it in my 83 truck where we replaced EVERYTHING and swore up and down that the valves don't go bad, but after replacing it it fixed things.
Just wondering if your rear brakes aren't doing anything and this is what is causing it to eat front rotors.
On my 05 the rotors actually rotted off the truck. The insides of the braking surface was all pitted and starting to rot over much of the surface, they did still have plenty of meat left on them though but were basically junk. My drivers side front pads were wearing really funny too with the outside pad being nearly 80% while the inside pad was about 10%
I would look for maybe kinks or something in the lines, heck maybe the calipers are not releasing quickly in the front.
I'm being pointed at the calipers and slide pins? So I guess I'll take the calipers down for a complete going through and just buy new slid pins while I'm at it... I think I'll go back to the Ford rotors again this time?
The slide pins aren't too hard to deal with. Just some hydraulically floating pins. When I redid all my stuff I was thinking that too, so I made sure to go through them. I pulled them out and cleaned them down as well as the bore in the caliper and then regreased them and put them back in.
After seeing mine rot out and hear from the parts guys of it being fairly common on the Fords and some of the HD dodges I would go with at least a wagner or semi name brand rotor. Mine rotted out from cheap steal, so hoping these don't.
Pads probably arent free in the caliper bracket. I'll bet the caliper is hanging up as well. First time i did brakes on my truck, i needed a torch to get the slides out of the brackets....
dang and I thought my brakes were bad, least they came apart fine, other than the bolts for the caliper bracket being locktighted and having only hand tools  2' cheater pipe helps, but still annoying lol
I had to heat the bracket nearly cherry F'n red to get those pieces of sh!t out. I had to hone out the inside of the whole where the slide rides. Probably more effort that it was worth, but i kept the calipers.
Was it your truck the rear brakes were so bad, it wore THROUGH the metal of the pad, and into the piston??

Yea umm... well... it was the front, but yea just about. Mostly from me being me though, maintenance has never been my fortee. I drove to and from work for 3 days with mostly downshifting for stopping. Final day I was leaving work, parts had been ordered and were waiting at the shop to pick me up, I made it about 2 miles from work and the caliper completely locked up when the backing plate for the pad got scrunched up and cracked both of the pistons when they came out of the caliper and got cocked in the bores. So, tow bill plus replacing a caliper (might have needed to be replaced anyways) were added to my repair costs
I had to replace the rotors anyways since they were rotted. This all reminds me, before the snow flies and next time I rotate the tires I wanna pull the calipers off and give everything a good inspection to make sure I am not getting that funky wearing I was getting before.
There is a reason why 05+ trucks get wayyyyyy more out of their breaks.
The 05-08's have larger brakes so the backspacing is different than the 99-04's.
In 05 ...engineers upsized brake rotors by 5 percent, to 347 mm in front and 340 mm in rear.
Other improvements include larger calipers for both the F-250 and F-350. The front calipers have twin 60 mm pistons - up 11 percent from 2004 - for better braking feel. Rear calipers have twin 48 mm calipers on F-250 and twin 54 mm pistons on F-350 dual-rear-wheel models.
You probably would have to change out the front axle.... I could be wrong though...
