So I'm in the middle of building traction bars for my truck. Here's the dilemma:
I haven't been able to find one regular cab super duty with traction bars to see how long they need to be. I read all the threads we already have regarding driveshaft angle, spring arch, etc, etc, but I still have this question.
The spot on the frame where I would mount the bracket for a traction bar that would match the driveshaft angle is right behind the fuel tank. The bracket I'm using on the frame can't go in that spot though because it will interfere with the fuel tank.
If I make the bars 72" long they will clear everything perfect and the install will go great.... but will they be too long and cause potential problems?
Alright. I'm planning on them being good and strong.
The reason I'm asking all this is because EVERYONE has a crew cab or extended cab and not many have regular cabs and traction bars. The whole "get the length right" thing has had me scratching my head for days and I finally decided to ask because not one thread I read directly answered the dilemma I'm in.
They dont need to match the driveshaft angle. The longer they are, the better street manners it should have. Mine are about 78 inches long from eye to eye. Mine bolt up to the 4 existing holes on the bottom flange on the frame by the t-case.
I found some from speedymetals.com and ordered it over the phone, $113 for two 6' lengths shipped. They have the best prices. $9.30/ft. The pipe shipped today!
You need to measure your axle position at droop and fully compressed to figure out the length of the bars. Your axle moves in an arc. Your design of your bars need to follow that best as possible. You will have to figure your out your two mounting heights before you do that. I have an super-cab short bed and mine are 61in from center to center of the mounting holes with 5" of lift on the truck, but I am running stock springs, each aftermarket spring will flex a bit different.
