been thinkin about something, but need more people to tell detail. if you have blown a motor what did the piston and rod look like that went? i want to hear NOTHING about the tops of pistons, this has nothing to do with that. i only want info/ pics of bottom of pistons and rods. thanks:ford:
I took out 4,6 and 8. Complete rod failure. The pistons that beloged in there were completely destroyed and in pieces all over the road. The rods had a nice 90* bend to them (what was left of them) leaving a 12" round hole in the block. Oil filter was found about 100 yards off to the side of the road.
I broke #8 piston which bent #7 rod, took out cam, lower cyl. walls, a few rockers, push rods and two nice vent holes in the block. Damn thing still ran to pull it on the trailer. #8 wrist pin is somewhere on Rte 72 in LBI, if anybody spots it, I want it back.
In the past I have been informed that I blew a couple engines, so I guess that qualifies me.
Original engine:
350hp max
Piston bottoms were light brown from scorched oil, but very light. Rods were 100% normal.
Failure was head gasket on stock bolts due to propane injection.
Engine #2:
544hp max:
Piston bottoms were dark brown from scorched oil, and #7 had daylight shining through the bottom of the bowl. Rods were 100% normal.
Failure was lost compression and excessive blowby due to cracked piston.
In both cases I drove the truck after the incident. In both cases I drove the truck into the bay where the engine was pulled. First case I drove for months. Second case I drove out to dinner afterward. The smoking precluded any farther driving the next day.

Mine was the bottom of the pistons skirts were broken off 2 cylinders( I dont remember which ones), and it made a very annoying ticking noise(almost like a rod knock). Never really got an answer as to what caused it except for heat, but I never even had the EGT's hot with stock AB injectors. Drove the truck for a month like that, and then pulled into the garage, pulled motor and saw the damage.
my motor was pushing around 500 or more hp before I had it though. I had cracks in 4 of the pistons so I highly doubt it was my fault that the rod went through the block as I only had it for around 3000 miles and never once got on it.
And yes I was running johnathans tunes. I learned a very valuable lesson that day never buy a used motor from anybody and trust them.
So is that kind of like warning people not to drink milk because it might kill them like it did to you.
But forgetting to tell them that you drank a gallon of drano and then after following it up with a glass of milk you nearly died and had to be rushed to the emergency room to have your stomach pumped?
I don't think we should all be wary of a glass of milk because of a situation like that.
Im just saying #### happens it doesnt have to be some big HP motor or bad tuning unexpected things can happen just a valid point to use aftermarket rods kind of like not all PMR will window a block most will but then theres others that may live long happy lives there are many freaks of nature out there
I didnt have it when it had 500hp someone else did they switched to the darkside i was makeing around 400-450hp and I was just happy to have my truck back for a while wasnt looking to try and blow her sky high just yet just wanted enjoy the ride again for a little while
And yes charles my logic my be flawed but im a firm believer in Id rather be safe than sorry
I do get your point same thing goes with crowers or any other aftermarket rod out there things can happen, i was just merely stateing what happened in my case. I wasnt looking for an argument or anything else just saying what happened to me. just to show that it can happen.
so any way, what i started this thread for..... has anyone every really investigated the pistons. as in how many of these failures are due to piston failure. i think it looks like mine and boggerrs are due to the wrist pin pulling out of the piston. i could be wrong but thats how it looks to me. my motor had 123k on it. brians and houses have way more, as in a lil looser cylinder walls. alot of my friends are tractor guys so i have always heard thats a weak point on some motors. just ask an ih guy why the dont bolt in a 530 even though it bolts right up.....
Yes, the connecting rods definitely tend to pull the pins out when they start to bend and contact the block.
I don't think we're seizing these pistons. I ran EGT like no other on my stock engine. No scuffing or anything like that, just cracks. Granted, I know some pullers run insane piston to bore clearances, but I don't have any reason to think we're necessarily in that boat. Any chance some of these same guys are running forged, as opposed to cast pistons? That alone would account for a massively different clearance need.
