so I was gonna put my truck away for winter, it's a 2wd. and buy a 4x4 for the winter. my wife says why don't you look into changing your truck into a 4x4.
so what is involved? since I don't have the knowledge what would it cost?
99.5 f350 7.3 c.c drw long bed the one in my avatar.
I havent done it yet but have all the parts. But I found myself a donor truck of the same year and taking everything I need off of it. Just buying a few new parts like u bolts and such.
I need to do the same, the 2wd dually in the snow up here doesn't cut it.
As far as I know, you'll need a Dana 60 for a dually with 4.10's, 4 hangers, shackles, leafs, driveshafts, and a transfer case (manual would be SIMPLE vs. ESOF). I think the only part that may be difficult would be bolting up a transfer case.
I don't think a whole donor truck is neccessary just time spent shopping and gathering the parts!
If you could get a full donor truck I think it would be the easiest, but might be hard.
I think the differnce in D60's for a SRW or DRW is only the wheel adaptors/spacers right? This at least would open you up for finding any 4x4 SD instead of dually only. Wonder if these trucks are getting old enough to find in junkyards now, least to get some of the parts you might need if not all of it.
Actually thinking of it now, lots of guys have been converting their 4x4's to 05+ style front susspension, might be worth it to look into doing that since I would think it would be closer resemblence to the 2wd, both being coil sprung with radius arms and all, but like everything its probably not quite that easy.

I have done this conversion, you will need 05 coil buckets, 40 bucks each from ford, axle, springs, steering, radius arms, brackets, redrill hole in pitman arm to accept 05 larger drag link, tranfercase, stuff to convert your tranny or a different tranny, remove plate in floorboard (trucks were originally designed to be 4x4) poke shifter through. It rides nice.
I am at work, I left my pen drive at home with all my picts, I'll get them tommorrow.
I would like to see those pictures Hookin.
I don't know which way I would rather go with, I like the leafs because its cheaper and easier if you want to level or raise the front/back a bit and my truck rides rough as hell as it is. But the 05 coil over axles seem to be almost a direct bolt up.
Here is a small write up of a conversion of a 04 4x4 to 06 4x4 but gives you a good idea on what it takes at least for the suspension, just would have to figure out the trans issue. 04 to 06 axle and suspension swap - Powerstroke Nation
I don't know much about the 4r100 but when I did a C6 from 2wd to 4wd it was a pain becuase the tailshaft had to come out the bellhousing  If the tailshaft on the 4r100 comes out the back then it shouldn't be too hard to swap, just get a t-case and tailshaft
