How much play is the carrier bearing supposed to have? i can grab the driveshaft and move it up and down quite a bit. I have a tire noise sound and slight vibration that i can feel that seems like its comin from the left front between 30 and 40 MPH, but the tire doesn't budge with the wheel bearing test. Wondering if the carrier bearing is the issue....
I just replaced mine. Old one had about .5-.75" up and down. New one less than .25". These are just guestimates from laying on my back under the truck.
no up and down movement?! if i grab the drive shaft, one hand on each side of the carrier bearing, i can move it up and down alot. i reckon that is not a good sign.....
FWIW, you may not need to replace the bearing. Take it all apart and inspect the bearing really well to see how sloppy it is. Mine had some movement in it and I ended up just replacing the rubber bushing which is a lot cheaper and easier. I got the rubber bushing from Carquest if I remember correctly.
The easiest way to get the bearing of is with an air chisel
