Just got back from a family camping trip through the canaidian rockies, pulling about 10k lbs. Turbo is surging like crazy during even moderate work. Ive got the 1.0 housing but was expecting better from this turbo. Ive got a stage 1 afe intake and thought maybe the filter is too small or old (just cleaned)?? or im getting too much hot air as the AFE housing doesnt make a seal with the hood?? I still didnt cut away a hole in front clip to get cold air in ..but do you think all this is enough to make it surge? Had the factory turbo with a ATS housing and there was zero surging. Is there anything i can do to eliminate this? other ideas?
When pulling in O/D doing about 60mph, so id say its about 1900rpm? never really looked...was always watching my boost gauge. I notice it when daily driving too, usually between shifts 3rd to 4th, on a hard acceleration.(AUTOMATIC TRANNY)
Thought about the 1.15. But going to try cheaper alts. first.
The dieselsite housing is interesting but writeup says these things are surging at 30 to 35 psi. mines at about 13-15 psi underload. Anyone tried these housings? How do they perform?
Would a better intake, cooler air help me, i may do some manipulating to my AFE stage 1. Or is that not enough?
If your thinking about the ported housing please call Bob and talk to him. He will more then likely talk you out of it. If your surging in the 13-15psi range, it will NOT help at all.
Your intake is fine. Who's tuning? You might call them and see if they can tweak the fueling and shifting. Get the RPM's up above 2200 or so and that helps a ton.
If you are running in low RPM's... less then 18-1700?? Or are you towing at 2k +++?? Low RPM's, big tires, and hills = surge.. . doesn't matter what housing you have.
I can get mine to surge when going up a hill and lugging it even with the 1.15. If the turbo is lit than I am good to go...
ELEC. FANS FOR SALE....going to put them on the house.. been hot here the last week.
Think im going to try some intake mods, and i know i have an up pipe leak on pass. side that may be contributing...ordering bellowed type ($571.02ca ouch!)...then ill see if theres a need for 1.15 housing
I have one buddy here that had surge issues with the 1.0 that the 1.15 pretty much cured. Have a few more guys that have the 1.0 with no issues. Seems odd esp with the same set ups otherwise to include tuning.
I dont think the housing is going to cure the surge, and even if it does, I think it'll be at the cost of egt's. I have a tune on my PCM from Jody before he pulled the fuel out for altitude. It's a heavy tow tune, and I can get the turbo to surge pretty good just going up a grade with no trailer at low RPM and giving it some pedal. The other tunes, even the 140X, with the fuel pulled out, do not surge at all. I think Matt said the same thing, he can get a tune to surge like mad just by adding fuel, then pull it out and no surge. My advice? Call Jody.
I believe the average elevation in the canadian rockies is roughly 7000ft, combined with the 35 inch tires and the 1.0 housing you will most likely always have surge when towing under these conditions, the 1.15 should help but dont expect it to completely go away.
When you are correcting an issue you need to follow some kind of order. First you must understand what condition causes the issue. Then you should identify some actions that will change that condition.
Surge is caused when the compressor supplies more air than the engine can ingest.
You can correct it by modifying something that will cause the compressor to supply less air. You can also correct it by modifying something that will cause the engine to ingest more air.
Now make a list of the things you could do that would cause one or both of those things to happen and pick your favorite ones from the list.
