Looking for the best way to remove the dowel pins in the back of the block. Bought an 01 eng out of a six speed truck and need to get the short dowels out and put the long ones in. Have tried the vise grip and a "little" heat. Open for any suggestions. Thanks!! Bob
Holy crap i have been through this. Those things are hardened so drilling isn't easy. I tried heat, vice grips, etc. After I finally had them broke clean off, I ended up drilling a small hole through the block and punched them out.

This man knows. He put my auto in has standard lol.
I would think that heating the area around the pins would let them come out easy with vise grips or by welding something on the end to slide hammer or just twist it enough to let go.
Edit: have you guys torn it down? How is it coming?
I have taken a disc grinder to one side of the dowel(just enough to make a small flat spot ) and then put a good pair of vice grips on them and twist and pull them out. Works for me more than once.
Also, the weld a nut to it, and a slide hammer. I do believe I would employ the aid of your favorite brand of penetrating oil after the weld job though. Remember welding will swell the pin, walk away (for a long time) and let it cool down.
