I'm new to this (diesels) but not to high performance internal combustion engines so if I wander of the res just chalk it up to inexperience.
Lately I've been cramming every piece of lit and heresay I can on the HEUI. I get it now (finaley) but have a ? A week or so ago I caught a "what if " session in here. It pertained to mech inj of a PSD. The consensius was that while possible we're a ways from making it viable to a consumer. That got me thinking, why can't we use the HPOP to preasurize the fuel instead. B4 you laugh remember I'm new so I can skate on a ? that is redicules. If there is a reason not, then what?
The HPOP preasurizes oil, why-not diesel, simular to a common-rail. Modify the inj to alow fuel in from the oil passage, block or dead head the return passages and redirect into the HPOP, the electronics won't care or even know about the new arangement.
If this is crap then call me out. If it's been answered please accept my opolgies and explain.
I think I understand the system, so here goes. HPOP wouldn't pressurize the fuel high enough, basically what it boils down to. The HPOP pressurizes the oil to around between 1700 and 3000 psi (depending on setup), and the injector multiplies that 7 times through hydraulic pressure to atomize the fuel at somewhere between 12,000 and 20,000 psi.
:whs: the hpop can not pressurize the fuel to the approx. 20k psi that the fuel needs to be at. the point of the heui system is that the fuel only has to be at about 60psi and the hydraulics in the injectors will do the work from there using the hpo. buy an injector and tear it down, it would be well worth the money spent. just my opinion, but i though i had an idea til i tore mine down.
OK! See, I'm still learning. I presumed the HPOP must be in the 20k range, so there's another piece of the puzzle. I have a couple ideas so here's #2 - The fuel rails are in the head already so how about adding 1 or 2 cp pumps from a duromax? Remove the HPOP completely, or use it to power auxilary oiling (piston squirters ect.) Can the stock HEUI inj controler handle a set of modified inj's running high preasure fuel? Or is this another instance where the teardown of a inj would give me the answer? This is probably anoying to those of you how are steeped in PSD knowledge but humor me if you would.
There are several people running PSD's with a p-pump (old school mechanical) and I believe they are all pullers.
There are people working on a CR conversion kit. Swamps has a front cover that will bolt up and all the stock equipment, (oil pump, water pump and CPS) will bolt onto it making it unique from the other covers avail that are not DD friendly but race only.
The head rails will not handle the CR pressures. There will be aftermarket plumbing for the swap kit. Swamp is going to have the complete kit finished soon, and best part is they are setting it up to run CR parts from the 6.4 PSD. Injectors, pump or pumps also from the 6.4.
I have been following this for a couple years. I think they are getting very close. The amount of R&D that goes into this, I would just wait for the kit IMO.
Thank you, that answers several ?'s. Being a "tight-@ss" I was hoping for a retro-fit or modified version using the PSD fuel rail and inj's. Sounds like the ball is rolling though. It's just been a curiosity to me why such a big engine (7.3) always eats sh!t when it comes to the dyno, not that some of you in here aren't making big #'s but the 5.9 guys seem to kill us. I probably shouldn't admit this but I own both, in fact all 3 (5.9, 7.3, 6.5td, 6.2na I just can't bring myself to wear a "ISUZU POWER" ball cap) and the low psi 5.9 kills my stroke even though their 160hp and 225hp respectivly.
hey guys. not to cut in.. HPOP.. what type of pump is that?
also. are the upgraded pumps the same...
by type im talking like. Internal/external gear. Radial piston. axial piston. vane?
and do the hpop make the oil go all the time and the injector unit controls everything and open/closes the oil for the actuation?
