Some of you know, I fly for Delta Air Lines, some of you never fly Delta again because of that fact. LOL Anyway, I just finished learning a new airplane and have been flying it the past 3 days. Took off out of Cincinnati today on my way to Seattle and while at cruise figured I would take a few shots of my office. This is a 737-800. I used to fly the 757/767, but stepped down a size to have a better schedule, AKA: a life. Its a fairly new airplane, and has full Electronic flight instruments, (EFIS, AKA: Glass Cockpit). Not a bad place to spend the day.
It depends, I like to hand fly up to about 18000 or so, then usually I turn on the AP, then I usually hand fly it on the final approach and landing. If the weather is bad, or there is a ton of traffic, I will turn on the AP at about 1000' to get my attention on other things, like not smacking into something. Today we did an Autoland into Seattle, because the airplane has to do one every 30 days to stay certified, and every now and then, you get a message from the dispatcher on the flight plan that request you do one for them. At cruise in High altitudes, its not very fun, nor comfortable to hand fly. I flew it yesterday all the way to 39000' because it was my first actual flight in that airplane. Airlines do 100% of their training in simulators now, the first time you actually fly it is a full passenger flight.
NICE, that would be a great way to make a living. only problem I would have is reading all the instruments. Guess I would have to find my bifocals .
Wish I knew where I put those darn things...?
I like it ok, its like a little sports car. Its only slightly smaller than the 757, 184 passengers vs. 160. It's tight in the cockpit, but so far I like it ok. The fastest other than the Concorde was probably the L-1011, and the 747. Those things cook along pretty good. We cruise about Mach .78, (78% the speed of sound) they are easily .82 to .86 cruise. We can do .81 on the 73 but its not real comfortable.
Thats too cool. I bet your job is a lot of fun. Ive always loved flying and always wondered what its like up front and what the pilots do, thanks for the pics.
I think Southwest only runs 737's? If so, that was the last plane i was in, those are pretty lil sweet planes, the cockpit was a little small when i walked by it.. would make it kinda hard to bang a flight attendant in it LOL (southwest does employ some of the hottest flight attendants i have seen..)... You should go private and fly someones G5, my neighbor takes care of one and those planes are bad ass... I have been begging him to let us take it to the bowling green airport, his boss said no
Man I hate plans, we had to fly from Bahrain and there wasa very long trip. I think it would be a heck of alot better in the cockpit where somebody isn't sitting on you .. That's pretty cool office though
Very nice new office. Glad to hear pilots still like to hand fly. The HUD display is cool. Maybe they will put them in cars someday so we dont have to look at the dash as often.
those pics are awesome of the "office"! Just one thing.. it doesn't look like that mountain is very far below the plane...
