Clogged A/C Evaporator

My Evap is all clogged up with 'gunk'!
How do I clean it out without removing it?
I don't think compressed air will do it.

Re: Clogged A/C Evaporator

i would think compressed air or replace it...but first, what is causing that? i've seen several construction trucks that i've replaced the heater cores in, but the evaporator's never looked that bad...even with all that dust in cab being recirculated on max a/c...got me?...is the evaporator leaking refridgerant causing it to collect dust?

Re: Clogged A/C Evaporator

First off what caused you to check the evap? Was it not flowing any air out the vents? Or was it not putting any cold air out? If it's the later you may be low on charge and like Casper said if it's leaking at the evap it will collect debris there. There is a small amount of oil that circulates with the refrigerant to lubricate the compressor.....dust sticks to it a makes mud.

You can clean the coil. However, I have never done one while in a vehicle. It doesn't look like using compressed air would really do the trick. I'm sure you could use something like simple green to clean the coil.....I use a product call coil bright. Make sure the condensate drain is not plugged up, apply the cleaner, let it soak in, rinse with a small amount of water and repeat as necessary.

Hope this helps

Re: Clogged A/C Evaporator

I was having issues with air flow through the vents. It did blow cold.
I pulled the blower motor as my first suspect, that's when I seen the evporator.
Not sure what caused it to get so bad. Has 230K miles on it, and it used to be a fertalizer delivery truck. The whole truck was filthy when I got it...

Thanks for the ideas. I think I might try the Coil Brite bath.

How hard would it be to change the part at home? Evacuating and charging the system aside...

Re: Clogged A/C Evaporator

How you clean it will depend on how that stuff that's on it responds to cleaning. If it is easily dissolved with some kind soap you can rinse it like ditch dawg said. If not you may have to remove it. If I removed it I would probably install a new one.
