Just thought I would share my experince with my 04 Ford F-250 Power Stroke. Several months ago my check engine light came on. I took it in to the dealer and wa told the EGR valve needs replacement. A couple months after that the check engine light came on again . This time I ignored it What could it possibly be???. Well to my surprise while towing my trailer the other day I noticed a strange smell while climbing a grade. After we crested the grade the smell went away. We detached the trailer a couple hours later and didnt notice anything wrong. We left the campground and I then noticed tons of steam pouring out the exhaust. After a closer inspection coolant was leaking out the exhaust as well. I thought I had blown a head gasket. We were towed in to a local dealer and today got word that the EGR cooler and oil cooler had failed. The worst part is that the warranty expired 17 days ago. So far the bill is up to 2900 bucks. My question is what caused this to happen? I only have 68k miles. How can I avoid this in the future?
I would try to get them to cover it under warranty.
I have worked at a couple of ford dealerships as a salesman and I have seen many many cases when something was out of warranty they would cover it...i would try!!!!
WTF  why exactly are you guys telling him ways around the warranty expiration? it may just be me but I read that the CEL light came on months ago and his warranty "just expired 17 days ago". who's fault is that? why try to rip-off ( steal ) from ford over lack of common sense? every ford owner knows exactly what warranty they have and when it ends. IMHO if you decide not to take your truck in when there's a CEL until after your warranty's up then its your dime.
what would any of you guys telling him to do this say if you broke down and legitly had a claim but the dealer said tough chit because this cat used up the last allowance under the program? I hope the OP has enough honor and dignity not to try to lie and get a freebie (ie steal) JMO
ford has a goodwill program. they give EVERY dealer a certain amount of money each month to pay for things that have failed just out of warranty or trucks that have been problems all through the warranty. i never knew this until the service mananger at the dealership i worked at. i dont have many details on it but talk to the service manager at your dealership explain your situation (leave out the ignoring the cel part) and mention ford good will program and hopefully he well take care of you.
that sucks buddy but im with fishman's idea you can do it yourself and there are a lot of guys on here that can walk you though it if you dont know what your doing.
Combustion gases entering cooling system = blown egr and oil coolers. i have seen so many comebacks. Some people go through a few coolers before they let me install head studs. 6.0l + 38psi of boost or 400 rwhp with stock bolts = head gasket leaks. Just my opinion.
why would you not try to get ford to cover it under warranty and how is it stealing from them if they agreed to a contract? you would be a moron to pay to fix it if ford would cover it

with only 68k on it the 17 day out of time should not have been any issue, Ford has always been fair with me on warranty work. Even when I was 18 and beating the snot out of my bronco II they covered stuff under warranty that really was more of an abuse issue than defective parts. But if I knew my warranty was about to expire I sure would`nt ignore any cel or any other possible problem.
I would be very, very concerned about my head bolts. If you pushed coolant out the exhaust because the egr cooler failed, I would check into the head gaskets too. Furthermore, your failed oil cooler is a major concern too...when it lets go it mixes coolant with the oil and sends that mess through the engine.
I couldn't take goodwill, or P18, monies from Ford for many reasons. I ignored my CEL for months. The repairs that are needed for my truck are not an upgrade, don't CURE the problem in the future, and seem to be overpriced by this dealership. And I work for Ford. I'm sure I will get heat for saying this, but I can't in good faith take assistance for repairs to my truck that are COMPLETLEY my fault.
I'm not for stealing, but I did have an instrument cluster going bad and 'since' they couldn't see it the 1st time and it 'checked fine' ended up under my extended warranty with a $50 co-pay. I wouldn't have expected them to cover it, but it was in the month before, and I told them it never read above 70mph and I passed everything on the interstate to them. The only reason it got fixed this time was the service writer saw it before it settled back to 0. The service manager even wanted to second guess him for a moment, then I pulled out the cellphone with pics to prove it showed 40mph sitting still. He then tried to argue that it could have been running with all the idiot dash lights on and no oil pressure. The truck came out of 3 yrs on Feb 28, I took it in on March 2 with 34,000 on it. Let them pay for it. I got lucky and bought a $2000 extended warranty, slowly paying for itself.
most of the time if your warranty is expired because of years and not because of mileage ford will work the customer..
As stated above, you could fix it yourself (or find another shop in your area) to fix it for alot less then that. We get 1650 for a new oil cooler, our full EGR delete and installation.
