I am thinking about buying a wrecked, newer model f250 7.3 PSD. I want to put a newer engine and a manual tranny into my 97 PSD. I am thinking about a 2000 or so truck that still has the 7.3 but has intercooler and the whole 9 yards. How hard is it to do that, and what other parts would i need? I want to switch to a new engine, manual tranny, and manual locking hubs with a solid axle in the front.
Thanks
Vlad.
hahaha well i know i need a donor truck. lol and i dont know what i want for my old engine. lol this is just an idea i have. i am not totaly sure if i am gonna go through with it.
For only 60 Hp increase you sure are willing to go thru alot of work. You will be able to make more power a little easier after you have a second gen 7.3. But w all the time and effort to put that one in, your 97 stoke will be a rocket if you put that time and money into your current engine JMHO
at this point i am not really looking for more power. The engine that I have right now runs like crap and i want to get it fixed to where i have a reliable truck. So i was thinking about getting a newer motor with less wear on it. And the reason i thought about the later gen powerstroke is because they were intercooled. But from what u guys are saying its probably a lot more painless to rebuild my engine.
So does my engine have a forged bottom end?
Also i still want to convert it to manual, and a solid axle in the front. How much trouble would that be?
You can intercool your current motor. No different work than what would be required with the newer one. You can swap the SD Turbo onto your current motor.
Axle swap- A SD solid axle will not have the right bolt pattern to match your rear end. It will also have the problematic unit bearings. Your best bet is to swap in a Dana 60 from a mid 80's to 97 F350. Lots of people have done it.
A SD 6 speed is not a bolt in deal. It can be done but it will take some fab work. 94.5-97 ZF-5 would work but you'd probably want to have a donor truck for all the small parts and pedals, brackets, etc.
Your engine has forged rods. All the super duty 7.3 parts will bolt onto your motor with some work. How many miles are on your current engine... What are the symptoms it's showing? Running like crap is a pretty broad description. It could be something very simple. Remember even the newest OBS is 12 years old... but in that same vein the newest SD with forged rods is at least 8 or 9....
To swap all the drivetrain from a SD you'll need an electric fuel system, the wiring will be different, firewall clearance for the turbo, intercooler install will be the same amount of work whether you intercool your current motor or another SD motor.
My suggestion- Fix the one you've got..... or sell it and get what you really want. It would be pointless to do all the swapping you want to do. Unless you have excessive blowby or rods hanging from the side of the block, chances are your current problems are a somewhat easy fix. And far less hassle and expense( not to mention time ) than doing what you propose.
Thanks a lot...thats exactly the kind of answer i was looking for. I guess i will fix mine up a little at a time. I got 235XXX on it and a leak in the oil pressure system that i am still trying to track down.
Thats what i originally thought when I bought this truck, but the fact that the fellow that had it before me was really hard on it kind of worries me. And thats the reason i was thinking about puting a newer motor in it. But i guess i will keep on throwing wrenches at mine till i figure out whats wrong with it.
I would suggest a compression test on this motor if you haven't done so already. If that checks out then your current motor is most likely fine. It just needs a few parts replaced. A bad injector can drive you crazy..... Trust me I know... You should have alot of miles left in that motor..It sounds like some of the parts on it may be at the end of their life span though.
I know that on a gas engine u use spark plug holes to do a compression test, what do u use on the diesels glow plug hole? Also what compression reading should i see on a good motor?
