So I work at Wal-Mart in the Tire and Lube Express. We had this man and woman come in and say that we put used oil in their radiator. I know some Wal-Marts have a bad rep for messing up cars, but the guys that worked on this particular car arent that stupid. Our boss told them that we dont do anything with the coolant system and they said "Your sign there says that you accept used oil." Yes we take used oil, but when we take it from customers it goes out back of the shop. The oil we drain from the customers stays in the pit below the car until we drain it. When we drain the vat it connects down in the pit. Never does it go about the pit.
So I'm comming to ya'll asking this: What could cause oil to be in the coolant?? I know I'm not the most knowledgable person about engines but I know there is more to this then what they are letting on.
And also, when they came in yesterday to us with this, about 2300 miles had passed since they had their oil changed. They are wanting us to repay them for all the services they had to have done to the car. They said the engine had to be flushed, all the hoses had be replaced and they had a new radiator put on.
My guess is it's a GM with Dex-Cool antifreeze. Tell them, without prior knowledge of the problem before the repairs were done that they need to take it up with your legal team.
Someone saw them coming and rode them hard at your expense.
I saw a glimpse of the work order, and I think it was a honda. Not a 100% sure on it. Anyways, they got the store manager and Co-Manager involved and are filing a claim with CMI on this. CMI is the claim agency on it.
If it's a newer Honda the coolant is red. I think it is Ethylenglycol based coolant. Same as the green just different dye. When the two are mixed it turns brown. Just another possibility.
They took it to a mechanic and thats what he told 'em. Either that or they needed work done and are trying to get us to pay for it. This wouldnt be the first time something like this has happened.
Wait, so a 3rd party mechanic told them that their is oil in the coolant. And instead of correctly diagnosing the problem as to why their engine is dumping oil into the coolant, the mechanic told them that Wal-Mart intentionally put the oil in the radiator????
I personally did an oil change on a vehicle (minivan or car, I can't remember), 2000 miles later, the water pump started leaking like a water fall. Like 80,000 miles on the vehicle.
Dumb woman took it to her usual mechanic and he said it was our fault. Woman finally talked to me and I showed her (we happened to have a similar vehicle in the shop) exactly what I do on every oil change. I spent over an hour walking her step by step through it. By the time she left she knew enough about the underside of that vehicle to call the other mechanic's bluff.
