My parents are going on a long trip and wanted me to make their early 99 CCLB F350 quieter and less hot. The aluminium bed I'd just finished really dampened the sound. And upon their insistence, I spent many hours installing fiber glass wrap on the up pipes and down pipe.
Then I found mention of the poorly designed climate control system. But I didn't like what some other people did with their mod either, shutting off only on MAX A/C.
parts:
ford ranger heater control valve I got mine from autozone P/N: 74809 for $18 image on Rockauto
Vacuum line: I got 10' of 7/64" for $12 and ended up using most of it because I had t make a repair.
A vacuum T: $2.50
4 Hose clamps: raided from my drawer of hose clamps.
procedure:
pop open the glove box using by bending the plastic allowing the stops through
There's a vacuum plug with 5 vacuum lines on the left side
these all control something here's a chart of when they have vacuum:
---------MaxA/C A/C Face-- Off FaceFeet FeetVent Defrost DefrostFeet
Black-----I-----I-----I-----I-----I-----I----------I-------I
Red-------I-----I-----I-----O-----I-----O----------O-------O
White-----I-----O-----O-----I-----O-----O----------O-------O
Yellow----O-----O-----O-----I-----O-----I----------O-------O
Blue------O-----O-----O-----I-----I-----I----------I-------O
A/C clutchI-----I-----O-----O-----I-----O----------I-------O
I may have made a mistake anywhere in this chart so peer review is encouraged.
Choose one of the lines to be your heat shutoff signal. most people seem to choose white, only shutting off the heat with Max A/C. I chose Red so they can use cool air vents but still have defrost.
pull the line out of the plug and install your T. I cut a short piece of vacuum lin to gap from the T to where I pulled it out
run your vacuum line from your T and through the Firewall. The Firewall grommet is not reachable by hand from the engine compartment and the vacuum line already there does not slide through. in hind sight I suggest disconnecting the vacuum line from the reservoir and tying a string to it. pop the grommet out from within the truck, pull the vacuum line back and cut a hole in the grommet. slide your new vacuum line through.and secure(along with the other vacuum line) to your string.
after reconnecting your vacuum supply line you're ready to install the valve itself or at least play with it. I chose to put it right behind the cold intercooler pipe. have hose clamps ready and work quickly or pinch off the hoses.
In my case, on a 70 degree day the A/C blew 45 and now blows 35. Also the compressor duty cycle is close to 50% instead of 100%.
