LOL Yeah, like how could anybody screw up algae? It even grows when and where you don't want it to! LOL Actually on that program I saw, they showed it being farmed VERTICALLY and taking up a fraction of the area that acres and acres of corn would. It was really interesting.
Corn is not generally used in biodiesel production. Soy seems to be the leading crop for that. However, corn is used in ethanol for E85. There are alternatives to food crops and algae looks to be very promising for a number of different fuel sources.

with the vertical tanks you were talking about, one company expects to be able to produce 100,000 Gallons per year per acre. No, that's not a typo, one hundred thousand gallons...
You can't beat that land use to fuel made ratio, period.
