Hey all,
Well after 8 months of driving a ricer after having my f350 I just had to go back to a ford diesel, so I just picked up a 04 f250 with 36k miles and love it. This is the first 6.0 I've ever driven or even been in, and for the price there was no way I could even think to pass it up. It is completely stock for the time being so I don't know if this is normal or not, but many times, usually at freeway speeds but sometimes slower, I will go to accelerate and the engine will act as if there is no turbo, like the rpms will go up and all that, but the turbo will not spool at all, like sometimes it will be about 10 seconds or more before the turbo lights. And today I was out romping around in the dunes and after a few minutes of hard driving, it kept doing the same thing, there was just no turbo, after accelerating slowly for about 5-10 seconds, all of a sudden it will light right up quickly and drive as if there is no problem. Anyone know whats up?
Hmm... well I forgot to mention it has a check engine light on and the guy I bought it from said he took it to the dealer and they said the egr needs to be replaced... Maybe this is my problem?
so thats why everyone deletes the stupid thing. There aren't any drawbacks to deleting it are there? The truck is a salvage title so I don't have to worry about voiding the warranty.
Ok so the saga continues. I talked to Abrannan on the phone today and he doesn't think the EGR is causing the problem. I think I'm going to get the uppipe delete from him anyways just so I don't have to get it done with but that's besides the point.
The condition has worsened. Now, after starting the truck, the turbo will not spool up until after I floor it and the tech hits the redline, then after that it will spool fine, that is until tonight. I just drove the truck to my buddies house and all the way over here, even on the freeway, the turbo would never spool all the way up, and it wasn't shifting until about 3500 rpms because I had to floor it just to accelerate to get to 40 mph, and let's not even talk about the 30 seconds it took to crawl to freeway speeds. I'm not liking this at all, anyone have an idea? And I don't know if this means anything but I straight piped the truck (w/ no cat) and every time I let off the pedal it stalls like crazy, extremely loud, I'm not sure if thats normal, maybe it is but again its the only 6.0 ive ever been in so I'm not sure...
gregrob you ass, the uppipe that deletes the egr, is that better? LOL
Ya the vanes sticking, abrannan said he thought that they could be rusted but I just don't see how they would be. But maybe I dunno. What I mean by turbo stall I mean when I let off the gas the turbo I guess it shreaks, sounds like stall to me but maybe it's just a characteristic of the 6.0 when it's straight piped. All I know is that I know smething would be wrong with my 7.3 if it made that noise everytime I let my foot off. Ugh these damn things drive me crazy, seems they never run quite right.

:lookaround: Kinda makes one wonder why it was priced so right with that low of miles:shrug: Here's a couple of articles for you to read- Turbocharger Reconditioning and 6.0L EGR Valve Cleaning. Good luck and have fun Scott.

Are you getting a lot of black smoke with the zero boost condition as well? My truck is doing similar things but not quite as bad. I will jump in it or even accelerate easily and I will get no boost till about 2k and then all of a sudden it lights and I have 10psi and accelerating a little faster than I wanted to lol.
I am hoping a turbo and EGR cleaning (posted above) will work to fix these problems. Mine only seemed to start having these problems after I put the lift on. Few months of driving with the bigger tires and going easy was all it took to coke up the turbo and EGR. Least thats what I am hoping it is.
The guy was a dimwit I really don't think he noticed the problem, I think he thought it was normal, and even if he did it was worth buying even if I have to replace the turbo, even if I had to replace the motor and granny for that matter lol.. No there isn't any smoke that I can see, but I haven't looked close, but I think I would probably notice it. I will probably take apart the turbo and see what's up.
Get rid of the EGR for sure, superheating your coolant is not going anything any favors.
The vanes are stuck in your turbo most likely. It happens somewhat regularly on stock 6.0's, particularly if they have some idle/low load times on them.
Mine did the same and so did my dads 04 and it was to sticking vanes and on mine a bad vgt module.
