I have a 06 F350 and am having problems starting it when it's cold and problems with it running when its the slightest bit cold. I have a S&B CAI and a magnaflow 4" Turbo back exhaust on it. Had the truck chipped but took the chip off and that doesn't seem to be making a difference. Anytime I go to start my truck in the morning it takes a very long time to start, it sounds like its about to start, or that its started but as soon as I stop turning the key over the truck just dies right away. Once I finally get the truck started it runs really bad until the temperature is right in the middle. Once the truck warms up it runs fine. When I try to drive the truck when its cold, the truck stutters alot and doesn't want to rev uo, it also blows out a little bit of white smoke, but once its warmed up it doesn't blow out any at all. I've also had some overheating issues when towing my 6000lb trailer up some hills (not sure if this would help at all but figured I would throw it out there). I've recently replaced both fuel filters and that didn't seem to make a difference. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Most likely your EGR cooler has chit the bed. Many times a plugged oil cooler can be a concern at the same time. If you don't get the EGR cooler replaced and keep overheating it, headgaskets will quickly become a concern as well.
Is your coolant res. full? If it it I doubt your EGR cooler is leaking.
Is your check engine light on? If it is do you have a way to pull te codes?
Exactly how cold are you talking about? could be a glow plug issue.
Does it fire right up when its hot? if it does then prolly not an ICP problem.
The overheating may be cause by an inoperative fan clutch, there is a connector on the driver side of the fan shroud, make sure that is plugged in and make sure that the fan blades have not torn those wires apart.
My truck doesn't want to start all that great anytime it sits for a while but is worse anytime it's around 5-10 deg Celcius. As for when the truck is overheating the coolant reservior is full and never seemed to go down, and it doesn't overheat a whole lot, it's just on a couple long hills. I never let it get too bad, I usually just pull over and let it idle to cool down. I'll check to see if my fan clutch is plugged in. Also my check engine light never has come on. As for the oil I'm running, its not synthetic and its 15w40 oil thats in it. The engine turns over really good as I just replaced my batteries and it has no problems turning it over.
If you are still covered under warranty, have a reputable dealer test the injector contribution and the FICM under cold conditions. Also, check coolant pressure under hard load.
whats the milage and oil change intervals? once its started and warmingup does it act like its running on two cylinders then three then four until its warmed up and running smooth? an 06 is a little new for injector issues but if the glow plugs are operating corectly thats what i'd lean toward. i've put many a one in for this type concern in the 03-05's again if all else is ok.
The millage is around 86,000 miles. I change my oil every 5,000km so around the 3,000mile mark. I"m not 100% about what my warountee covers now but will call the dealer and find out. I just dont want to bring my truck in there, have them work on it and tell me that I owe a couple thousand for a fix that isn't covered under warountee and for one that I possibly could have done myself. Whats the best way to make sure that my glow plugs are working properly?
Casper, it does kind of seem that way while it warms up. If the temp gauge is right at the bottom it doens't want to move at all, but as the temp guage starts to rise it will stutter for a bit and slowly accelerate and slowly gets better and better until the temp guage is right in the middle.
I had the same problem with mine last winter and again a few weeks ago.I wound up replacing 3 injectors,EGR cooler, and the fan clutch.Everything was warranty work at 76000.If you go to the dealer have them check those three and the oil cooler and you should be able to find the problem.
Sounds like injector stiction is the biggest problem. My truck had it, and it progressively got worse, finally it got to where if the truck had sat for a few days and it was cold it took an act of congress to get it started. Had the dealer install the latest flash which sends electric current to the injector and acts as a way of heating them. It made a HUGE difference. It still runs a little rough when it's cold, but at least it will start.
I just made an appointment to bring my truck into the dealer. The truck is going in on Thursday. Once I get the truck back I'll post everything that was replaced and let everyone know if it fixed the problem or not. Thanks everyone for the help.
I had the same problem except not as severe. Mine ('06 250) would start fine, but idle VERY rough when cold and forget taking off in a hurry, no power and lots of shuddering. Block warmer was my best friend.
So I took it to the stealership this week because it has 93k miles and I wanted to make sure it wasn't injector issues. I told them to do the induction heat flash that I read about and it runs properly when cold now...
I got the inductive heating flash last winter and it fixed most of my problems, but its definitely worse this winter. Reading this is giving me different thoughts. First I thought I just has glow plug maybe some injector problems but I get most of the first symptoms, except if I let it sit for about 1-2 minutes and then go to drive it will power up ok like a normal cold truck. If I crank it over and go to pull out maybe 30seconds after it will run like crap with no power and not want to go about 1500rpm or so. Sometimes when it finally starts up I will get some black smoke as well as some white.
Probably send it to the dealer soon to get my moneys worth out of the motor warranty, just wish I could get some studs put in at the same time lol.
Not trying to hijack this thread but Im have an issue like this one.
If I gets around 30 degrees and I don't plug my truck in, it will turn over more than usual before it starts and it will shake for about 5 secs before it idles right. It just sounds really bad and rough but will smooth out. I got an SCT programmer. Is this normal? Also, it sounds like the battery is almost dead when Im cranking it but i drive it everyday...
The dealership ended up replacing the fuel injection control module and my egr cooler. This fixed the problem for a tiny bit but was still blowing out some blue smoke. So I brough the truck back and they replaced all my injectors and now the truck runs good.
But today I started my truc and let it warm up a bit, than hopped in to drive away and it was vibrating a little bit, went to drive away and it would vibrate anytime I was at low rpms or iddling. So now it's going back to the dealership to figure out this problem.
