im just wondering if anyone has done hydro assist on their trucks? i dont want to buy a kit. i'd like to drill and tap my box, but i havent found anywhere that has the locations to do it at.
straight to the manufacturer? it didnt come as an option or standard equipment. the old ford trucks ran it for a couple years but it was a way different setup than what can be used on these trucks. early chevy cars also came with it but their rams are too small to use.
what i need is the locations on the box to drill and tap for the fittings. tyler thanks for the pm that did help. the chevy boxes are nice because you dont have to tear them down, just pop the top and front caps off and drill them. i found a kit for $1k, im hoping to do this for less than $200.
anyone have pics of the boxes that have been done?
I got my stuff from Lee manufacturing. They build the kits for ORU, and are less than 1/2 the price. They also port the hydro booster to help increase the volume.
Good luck,

i dont have a hydro booster. i do see they use the stock pump, i was talking about the gear box. i dont want to have to buy a new steering gear box. thanks for the info
Alot of the rock crawlers use either one of these rams depending on the stroke need to turn the wheels lock to lock.. I believe our truck require the 8 inch stroke..
full hydro can be done to be streetable, my chevy will have full hydro and be streetable, street legal is different. skav where is your drag link in that pic? it didnt look like you had highsteer.
skav, could you snap a pic of where the lines go into your steering box?
tyler, it doesn't look like the ends are replaceable on that ram. i'd like to get a single acting one that i can replace the ends on.
I made a cross over setup for the drag link. I guess it's sorta high steer. I have a raised arm on the passenger side, and the link connects directly from the pitman arm to the arm on top of the knuckle. I also have a kingpin front end instead of the ball joint setup.
i have one of those from tony sitting on the shelf for the chevy, if i can ever get around to building it. skav i did notice the king pin front end but i didnt see the arm on top. no biggie. i guess i'll just have to tear the box down and figure out the passages on it. thanks for the info.
So garbage trucks and the like are against the law huh.... Find where it says full hydro is against the law. POST IT!
Then find me a cop who knows the difference. : )
I uses all PSC Components i my setup and it works great! I built a Tie rod and put over the knuckle. Then I connected my Ram from the tie rod to a heavy duty aftermarket Dif Cover...
i did notice that garbage trucks are full hydro, but i also did read a california vehicle code that stated you need a "mechanical link" from the steering box to the axle. i can tell you that my chevy will have full hydro front and rear
I am VERY interested in doing this, i cannot turn the steering wheel with my 38s sitting still. I HAVE to be moving.
I am also VERY confused yet. how all does it work? The links someone posed where they bought they got it done half off links didnt work...little more info please guys
I just did assist on my Ex with the 5.9 CR. I used PSC components. The one thing i found is you want a small dia ram so it will react quicker for the street.
I love it. I can steer with 1 finger sitting still with my foot on the brake on
