A/C clutch noise

Hey guys, recently upon starting the truck and the AC compressor cycles on, it makes a slight shudder, ALMOST grinds. When it does this you can smell like oil come thru the vents.
After I get the truck moving it stops and never hear it again.
Air is cold so compressor is working, so is the clutch shot or low on oil?

Re: A/C clutch noise

.
I have seen a few compressor clutch bearings fail, if it makes noise with the clutch disengaged then its probably the bearing.

Re: A/C clutch noise

I'd lean towards the bearing failing as well, another not so uncommon failure for the 6.0!

I usually just replace the compressor as a whole unit since most of the time people wait untill they melt before considering it an issue, the shaft seal usually starts leaking shortly after that.

Re: A/C clutch noise

My '06 makes the grinding sound when I first turn on the A/C if I haven't run it for a while. I don't get any kind of smell from it though. It's done it since new. I used to have a Ford based motor home that did the same thing. Don't know if it's normal or not but mine seems to be fine.

Never really worked on motorhomes but the ambulances would actually blow apart compressors, crazy seeing them blown in half, there was a reflash to fix it. Not sure what it changed but it worked.

Re: A/C clutch noise

it just cost me $1787 to have my whole air system replaced because the compressor failed and i got metal shavings thoughout the system..it didn't make much noise for very long and then it just setup and snapped the belt...leaving me stranded.
compressor, condensor, fittings, and god knows what else is added to the list of parts i've had to replace since the warranty stopped...and i only have 70,000 miles on this 06..
