I've been wanting one for so long...finally got the opportunity tonight.
My old Neighbor called me up, and said that he had to let his new pup go.
6 AKC Champions in his lineage, Bull Mastiff.....Dad is on the left...my new AKC Bull Mastiff puppy is on the right...breeder in the middle.
Me and my new puppy.
...one thing that had always bothered me was hearing...."oooooh...big bad biker...nice dog"...
....in which I responded...."not my dog, that is my wifes,...she had it before I met her"
...he was the only "fawn" in the litter...the breeder was keeping him for himself, because he was the "pick of the litter"....I got real lucky to get him...he's beautiful
OK...decided to take the pup to PetSmart and pick up a few things...that ended up harder than I first thought it would have.
First off...My truck sits as high as a truck with 8" of lift on 38's....and getting "tiny" up in there ended up with me bear hugging him and putting him in...same thing with getting him out....fun fun.
Second...I wanted to get him a new dog collar...yeah...right....try and find a 28-30" dog collar at PetSmart....biggest I could find was 26"...and the ends didn't even come close to touching...much less buckling.
...and am VERY happy that he is trained properly, not just the regular crap(sit, stay, come, etc), but the stuff that matter the most...like....he will not leave my side, my right side to be exact...if I turn...he turns, making sure that I'm always on his left....
...which comes in very handy when there are other dogs around, he won't even look at them unless I give him the feeling that it is ok....
...I'm VERY happy owning this big oaf.....I mean little puppy....LOL
I knew when I got the dog from the breeder, that he was "pick of the litter"...the best features, the best temperament, a AKC show quality dog w/ papers, etc, etc.
Here is my issues...
1. My wife has a 4lb Chihuahua
2. They say my Bull Mastiff will continue to grow between 18 months and 2 years old...and don't fully "fill out" until 3 years old....on average their size (24 - 27 inches)...he just turned one year(this week), and is already 27".
...which leads me to my problem...
3. I want to put a dog door in my door...3'0 x 6'8" door
...the door isn't really a problem...I could always just buy a door and cut a hole in it....but...I want a Doggie Door....biggest I could find was 15 1/2" x 27 1/2" (flap size)...but they want almost $600 for it..
...anyone know of a Doggie door for EXTRA large dogs(min flap height 27"),..that won't break the bank?..
.....or am I going to have to end up custom fabb'ing this is my own?
OK...so I now have the dog I always wanted...and after reading up on them...they don't like extreme temperatures...hot or cold.....just like my wifes little Chihuahua...
....soooo...what do I do as a responsible parent to a Bull Mastiff puppy??
...I try and keep him warm right?.
Here is my "HOW TO"...LOL LOL LOL
Take (1) Extra Large Tactical Combat shirt.....cut like so
Now if you noticed...I made an extra cut on the right sleeve...I cut about 7" off the end..
.....that was for my wifes dog....LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
Great looking dogs!....Mark Twain once said " the more men I meet, the better I like my dog"...I'm sure you'll enjoy him for many years!
They both appear to be rather happy with their new "outerwear"????? LOL
I ran into the same issue looking for a doggie door for my 4 boxers...but their house is a climate controlled 8' X 8' storage building. I ended up just cutting a big hole in the side and putting a THICK rubber flap attached at the top. The thin rubber one........ they had a party destroying it
I loved my mastiffs I had two Ambullneo's brother and sister, had to downsize after they passed on though, picked up my boxer. I love the Big breeds or in your case Tank the Giant Breeds. That boy is gonna big a brute. That and with him in the truck you never have to lock the doors.
Fab'd it myself......because I couldn't find I couldn't find one that would work for both dogs, which needed to be low enough for the wifes little dog to get through, and high enough for my dog to get through....
Total cost...about $125.00
Mat for under computer chair...$40
Aluminum angle from HomeDepot $75
Tube stock from HomeDepot $8
tube stock screwed in...to mount plastic on both sides(double layer)
I bought my Border Collie/Chow the same bone for Christmas, it was gone the next morning except a few little chunks. He's much smaller of course, but there's something to be said for an ADHD/OCD dog that won't leave his bone alone for 18 hours solid.
Doggie door looks good, but do you have an option to block it off to keep the criminal element and/or critters out? Possibly a "Z" bar to make a channel for a solid plate to slide into? Or even some quick attach fasteners like dzus or something similar, then you could even insulate it, and let the insulated portion sit inside the cavity of the door, cutting down on heat loss through the doggie door when not in use.
