I am experiencing a wierd rattle when going over bumps on the road. But it doesn't make this sound all of the time, only when the bumps and speed is significant enough.
As a result, I retourqed my lug nuts as well as my caliper bolts, and tightened a number of things underneath the hood. But I am still experiencing the same sound under the same conditions.
It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side and you need to have the windows down to really notice it. I intend to go underneath the truck to further investigate, but it could be just about anything and want to narrow it down a little at least.
I read a post today about another member experiencing something similar. It was suggested that it could be the leaf springs which could be clattering when going over bumps. But it sounds like it's coming from the front end..
Also could be leaf springs slapping each other, if its more of a clunking sound. But if it feels like its something hitting your floorboard, its probably sway bar links loose or bushings
They just get worn out over time...,my truck used to be in a West texas oil field, and was rode hard. The body has almost 300k,, motor almost 200k.. And idk in all cases if you can see a gap
how about a little info on the truck ? To check the ball joints jack tire off ground put a bar under tire and lift have someone look to see if there is movement should be none if one is bad do both top and bottom......
ghohouston, great stuff. I will have another look for a gap in th leafs.
About my truck? I will do my best here. 2005 F350 with approx. 140,000 miles. Purchased it second hand over the summer last year. Originally, it was from the interior, around the Cranbrook area which is close to the rocky mountains (I live in British Columbia). It was owned my an old man who would use it to tow and to do some work on his ranch (if my memory serves me correctly.)
Having a look underneath the vehicle, I get the idea that it was put through it's paces. The rear shocks needed to be replaced according to the inspection my local ford dealer gave to my truck. The shocks (front and back) that were on the vehicle when I took posession were not even stock so they were replaced in the past at some point. They had rust on them, and upon removal, one of them wouldn't even extend to their intended length.
The frame rails have rust on them too along with much of the chassis but it's only on the surface; the product of heavy winters and road salts of the interior no doubt. The engine block has some surface rust too and there is a noticable amount of sand underneath the truck as well. A friend of mine will be re-undercoasting my truck in the near future.
Aside from that, there was green coolant when I got it as well as a Pennzoil oil filter. There were also zip ties on the fuel line which lead to the fuel bowl. Egr cooler looked pretty clean upon removal. On start up, there is some blue smoke and the stock head gaskets don't leak one ounce. When I took out the HPOP out to install the STC fitting, I noticed uniform etchings on the lobes (I think that's what they're called) of the camshafts; don't know if this is normal.
Jestersv, can you explain how to check my ball joins one more time? Didn't quite understand your procedure there...

raise wheel off ground enough to put a prybay under tire and lift straight up that will load and unload balljoint as you lift have someone watch balljoints and or feel to see if they move they should not move up or down or in out they should only rotate as tire turns. Go to youtube and search how to check balljoints its there several of them....
mine was doing the same thing for awhile but on the passenger side, found out the rubber was missing out of the shock mount and they were replaced 1 1/2 years ago, but read you did shocks last year, maybe worth taking a look at?

Sway Bars links!!! I replace mine a few times a year and thats how I know that it's time. I bought the lifetime warranty ones from O' Reilly's. I put 15K + on my ruck each month so I wear them out fast. Monroe Reflex shocks every 20-30 for free also. : -)
In retrospect, I don't know if I would describe what I am hearing as a rattle, but more like a clunking and only if the bumps are significan enough, same with speed.. Where do they typicall snap or break SledDogg? In the middle or the ends?
Oh, I paid $14 and $22 for sway bar end links and $200 for the Monroe Reflex shocks VIA A COMMERCIAL ACCOUNT.Your 05' may be slighty differentwith the Different front end. Shocks should be about the same.
Shock bushings? Ball joints? Swaybar end link bushings (Upper or Lower)? Swaybar to axle bushings?
Get a pry bar and start levering stuff at the areas noted. If there is movement, the bushings are worn. Use google to find out how to test for worn ball joints.
Mine have never broke, even the el' cheapo O Reillys house brand parts that I installed. Joint just wears allowing movement. Sounds like classic sway bar link sounds. I worked on many trucks and I've never seen a truck making noise from bad ball joints.(heavy duty, i.e HEAVY TRUCK).
