I was wondering if any of you guys have installed any double din nav systems like a Kenwood 5120 or 7100. Crutchfield website says it wont fit? Seems like I have read a thread or two that a couple guys have done it. I just don't want have to cut the dash panel up and make it ireversable Any pics would be helpful too. Thanks Ben
highly recommend the Pioneer AVIC-Z series or the new F..best unbit I have ever had..double din..built in hard drive that rips music and stors it to a built in 30 gig hard drive..20 of that gig is dedicated for the navigation POI's and 10gig for music.
The only thing you have to trim is the upper and lower lip in the dash. You can't see it until you pull out the stock radio, and if you ever go back with the stock unit, it will hide the cuts you made. A few minutes with a dremel tool is all you need.
Other than that, just fab up a mount, and you are good to go. Mine works great, and fits nicely in the dash.
I have a screen mounted in my truck, just have to cut the lip like curtis said.
On the in dash navigation, what I did was I bought an double din dvd player/screen that had an add on for navigation. The navigation unit was $300. I started to think about it, and ended up buying a tom tom for $200. My reasoning was it was cheaper, and I can take it from car to car. So if I go somewhere in a different car I still have navigation its not stuck in my truck.
Then a month after I bought tom tom, I get a new cell phone that has navigation built into it . Oh well, now I will probably use the USB input on my screen to control the tom tom, if it will work.
Thanks guys, thats what I needed to know. And thanks for the product info also, theres so many brands and options with these things now days and then in 6 months there outdated.... But the factory radio is not cutting it anymore and I travel from job to job alot and need the nav system. Thanks again...
That's always the best advice when looking for a new head unit. I went to different stereo shops and played around with their display units. With any of the in-dash DVD/NAV units, every one of them has their advantages and disadvantages. Find out which unit you prefer by playing around with the menu's, features, etc.
ive got a clarion with the external nav add on. Its sweet! mine has 30gig hd with 10 million pts of interest. My only complaint is not being able to change the nav route or look for poi's while the truck is moving.
The install shop wired it up so that to watch dvd's i have to turn the parking lights on. They did this so that if i got pulled over all i had to do was turn my lights off. I
Some use the speed your going to lock out the features so that might be why he cant override it. I wired my brake sensing wire so everything works all the time. But on the nav ones that doesnt always work as they know your moving
i've got the alpine iva-d900 and the add-on nav. i can search going to the road but its a little tricky getting it to override. they do make a box to do it for you. have dvd players and nav come way down in the last couple years?
there is a ground setup to the parking brake but it doesnt have to be on for the video to work. i have to hit the brakes engage the parking brake, then disengage, engage, disengage, then let off the brakes and the video will come on. if i hit the parking brake again i have to leave it on. normally i use the trailer controller as it turns on the brake lights but doesnt slow me down.
From your previous post sounds like you are already familiar with it. But if you get a PAC TR-7 trigger module you can bypass the Alpine units and never have to do the brake dance again.
who doesnt like the brake dance? yeah i have looked into the tr-7 but cant really justify buying one if it only takes a second to bypass it. the only time i bypass it is to watch a movie or change audio processor settings.
I got tired of the "dance" I had to do on the alpine that was in my vette. I bought a project box from radio shack and put two toggle switches in it and flipped them to get the alpine to kick in. There wasnt any other solution out for it when I got mine years ago.
Try using a very sharp razor knife, and a steady hand, thats how I trimed mine. Took awhile but it came out nice enough for me for now.
