I'm nearing the completion of my 38r install with 99.5+ manifolds and bellowed uppies. I noticed already that when trying to set the turbo in place the wastegate arm hits the firewall. Just curious if I can make room with a porta-power or not and if anyone has done this already.
Tristan, I chose to just cut off the arm and I drilled the housing to hold a bolt to pin the wastegate shut to deal with that issue. I do not see the need for a wastegate with just the stage ones. My best recollection to those that made the wastegate work involved firewall cutting. I think Powerstrokeracer had photos from the Bronco.
Ok thanks Tom. I'd like to keep it functioning as I'll be switching to 238's after some more parts, tuning and dyno testing. Also I had come up short on cash flow from trying to get my truck just back on the road again so I'd still like the air springs but it may be another two weeks before I feel comfortable putting out the extra cash. This tranny and turbo job got real expensive.
The little arm is the part right in the way. I clearanced mine some with a sledge and a bottle jack on a block on top of the motor.
One of the most difficult jobs of the project was firewall clearance. I think that my truck has the motor situated about as close to the firewall as they come and that added work for this project. I loosened the motor and tranny mounts and slid them forward about a quarter of an inch which helped some. It may have also helped some to pull the cab back. The SD pedestal is taller which creates a clearance issue.
I used a sledge hammer and a small bottle jack to bend this area of the firewall for clearance for the turbo.
Once the insulation is put back up everything looks factory again.
I managed to make clearance fairly easy with a porta-power.
New problem, the IC pipes I got from Chris look pretty good but the driver side pipe is way off. Passenger side fits really nicely. Not sure what I'll do yet. Its like the angle of the upper part that goes to the turbo outlet is off by 15-20 degrees toward the front of the truck. Might cut it along the vertical area and weld it back in place.
