I love reading articles like that. You're told that the motors are great, but your headgaskets might not be blown: "...... the real problem was a bad degas bottle cap, plugged heater core, unrelated coolant leak, plugged oil cooler, or our next topic: the infamous egr cooler.
Then they proceed to say how bad the EGR cooler and EGR valve are: "The next thing you may have read or heard about is the egr cooler and/or valve. This system is just a nightmare on these trucks."
And oh yeah - injector stiction, and FICM's that go bad.
Well, this engine was a result of uncle sam (EPA) pushing new emision standards on the car industry and not giving extensions to iron out new technology. International was not ready to put the engine in production in 2003, none the less THEY DID.
They had a hot rod diesel for its size 6.0=363 cid @325 hp comparing it to the 7.3=444 cid @ 275 hp.
The 2005 up engines are much better, bigger head bolts,h/d cast iron hpop, larger water pumps, better turbos, 2006 is the commonization engines where more problems were resolved.
But if these engines aren't over tuned and if MAINTAINED they are damm good engines, I have a 2006 with 73K and it runs as good as the day I bought it, delta #s are 2-4 degrees and I have no regrets at all.
International/Navastar/Ford/ all the same in a f250 ,if you look at all the parts on a F250 that is subcontracted by other comanies the list would be like a phone book.
Brother in law has 4 6.0 diesel F250 trucks one has 220K other has over 180K both with no problems 05&06.
He also does have the other 2 being stripped for parts after blowing out either head gaskets or egr coolers. So 50% of them are good engines, lol will say maintanance is not his strong point he runs his trucks hard and ran the diesels like gassers 10K+ oil changes ect till the problems started.
Was reading a article on the 6.0 history and thats where I saw the different sized head bolts on different years. Will look on international website and verify bolt mm

Where did you buy yours from? Every set I have bought are year specific whether its for the 03-04 or 05-07 which are 2 complete different sets due to dowel size and I have done more then a handful of them.
What does dowel size have to do with the bolts or studs? Of course when you buy kits that include gaskets with the bolts, etc, it will be year specific, but that is unrelated to the bolts/studs.
Look ALL OVER the Internet for ARP studs for the 6.0L. Below are three of my favorite shopping places!
I think another problem with these 6.0L's are Ford's higher h.p. ratings.
Why is it you didn't see all kinds of International medium duty trucks with these motors having all these issues?
International agreed to the higher power output. They claimed they could do it.
You don't see all kinds of International trucks with these problems because there are no forums like this one to talk about it. Also, nobody puts a tuner on those trucks. But they still have head gasket problems. And no, I can't share my source of that data. You will either accept it or not, it doesn't matter. The truth is what it is whether or not anyone believes it.
Good point, and I think they might. My heads are of the 18mm dowel variety and the head gasket kit came with a 18mm x 20 mm dowel (18 for the block, 20 for the heads). I didn't happen to notice if it came with a 20mm x 20mm dowel for 20mm blocks. Or maybe there are two kits: one for 18mm blocks and one for 20mm blocks. That actually sounds more plausible.
I have seen things on websites about head bolt sizes for the 6.0 and found it on ficmrepair.com on his performance page or freq asked questions page right above the diff php programs.
Bismic knows all, he looks at these engines surely more than he would like.
Have looked at international website, one size through all production years. Don't believe everything you read on internet?lol
One size fits all...........
Looks like a kit for early 03's (pre-October 2003 with straight rail stand pipes), a kit for 18mm dowels (October 2003-2005), a kit for 20mm dowels (January 2006-2007), and a kit for reman engines that have been bored .030 over (18mm dowels only, 2003-2005).
I have a 06 6.0 with 165k and haven't had a single issue with the truck.
