So I did a quick search and nothing really came from it, Ive got HARDCORE backlash from what Im guessing is my rear diff, mainly in first or second when I ease out the clutch on the bottom end, though not a whisper with a load on the truck. Any idea whats up with that? I changed all the fluids right after I bought the truck and the fluid looked like it might have had some water in it, looked like chocolate milk pourin out of the rearend. So my question is what do you think is causin the backlash and how hard to fix it. Also if its gonna cost me my soul to fix it, how hard would it be to swap a F350 rearend into it? Would it bolt directly up or what? Unfortunately Im on a real strict budget (they dont pay us sailors much) so I dont have a ton of cash to burn right now.
I'm guessing you're talking about axle wrap? How big of a block are you running in the rear? You will need a set of ladder bars, which can be bought for around $5-800, or built for as little as $100 if you have tools to do it and basic fabrication skills (welder, grinder, some sort of saw to cut metal). If you're talking actual backlash in your gears (which I highly doubt) it will cost you to fix depending on the severity.
The back lash can be a few things...the crush washer on the pinion nut spun and wore out(pinion nut starting to back off), or you spit a shim on the carrier(sucksssss to fix).
put the truck in neutral, block the tires,...just grab the driveshaft, and try to rotate it..if it clunks back and forth,...then you know where your problem is
just did that, its definitely got back and forth play
