Hey everybody, newb here from s.c. i have read alot of interesting info on this site thanks to all.
I have a 2000 f350 7.3 200,000 miles on it never had a prob in the three years i,ve had it. I was on the highway doin bout 70-75 when with no notice i loss all power,i let up on throttle momentarily, then back into it,and got a big backfire, then it started to smoke alot run rough and have no power.pulled codes and it had a p0470 exhaust backpressure sensor.....I replaced sensor, removed the tube and cleaned, cleared code but still runs like crap,no power,no boost lots of smoke. any help would b greatly appreciated.
Does it puff smoke or pressure out the oil fill tube? With engine running, place oil fill cap upside down on tube and see if it will sit there or blow off.
I doubt that it was a big backfire. It was likely a turbo boot rupturing, or something else on the air pressure side blowing. I assume the heavy smoke is black, correct? Check the boots first and see if any of then have a hole in them or just came off loose. My bet is that what happened.
camspringsjohn,i already checked all the boots, they check out fine, the smoke from the backfire was black at first, now when it runs it is blueish grey, smells like a ton of unburnt fuel.
Dieselpop,I will check that in a bit and reply with result.
Do you have oil coming out the tailpipe! Could be the turbo seals are gone. If Dieselpops tests comes back OK, then it is likely somewhere in the turbo/air to air cooler system.
I agree with Campspringsjohn that the problem is most likely in the turbo/cooler. Just wanted to try the oil cap test because it is simple and help rule out blowby.
Do you have any mods done to the truck? Wastegate disconnected, chip, etc. Were there any other codes before you cleared them? Do you have a scanner available such as AE or similar?
diablosport predator tuner, currently in 85 hp gain, only other code was a pcm live memory error,i think it might be utc harness because when i started it,the pass side exhaust manifold was cold....pass side is also where the backpressure sensor reads from, therefore kinda makin a big happy non running circle of crap. goin to check the utc let u all know....sorry uvc harness.
ok i changed the uvc and gasket on the pass side, the right side exhaust manifold gets hot now but it still runs extremely rough and still puffs a lot of raw diesel, won't hardly rev up to 2000rpm without spittin n sputtering and backfiring.oh the oil fill cap stays on the spout....no blowby, helllllllllllllllllllp.
I think the problem is in the UVCH. Especially since replacing the one side helped. There is a test you can do to check all of the connections. I don't know what it is unfortunately.
do you think i should replace other side as well,or could it be injectors or what the heck.
i just don't understand how one sec it ran fine and the next sec it is pulling code for backpressure sensor, which i wonder if the backfire i originally got may have attributed to that code,i dunno, maybe? well can anyone tell me how to check injectors or can i even do that at home,i wonder if i have some stuck open,or possibly if the ipr is bad and forcing to much fuel through the injectors if that is possible.Any further suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks to all so far
ok i just did an ohms reading on drivers side injectors all read 3.2 is there anything else i should do here before i re install valve cover, should i replace the uvch here for the hey of it? Guess i'll tear apart pass side again to check those inj.(wish i knew about the ohms check yesterday when i had that side apart) that side is a beeeeyatch to remove.oh well. ok if the inj all read 3.2 does that eliminate the possibility of a stuck open inj? oh and one more tidbit to throw in,don't know if it means anything but when i turn the key on my fuel pump makes a lil more noise than usual and seems to run a lil longer than norm, don't know if that leans towards another direction.ok off to check pass side inj.i'll post my findings in a lil while. Thanks again to all who are trying to help me out.
I put 437000 on one of these things and have experienced a variety of issues. that grey smoke could be the idm. Like the one guy said above, check your boots and tubes. that loss of power could come from that. A bad HPOP also will blow oil at the tailpipe as well. I replaced the hpop and ipr at the same time, it was good money spent. if the hpop is going and has for a while, id do a buzz on the sticks and pay particular attention to 8 and 7. thats just wut i know, goodluck...
One more thing, check the torque specs on your clamp mechanism for your injectors. an out of spec bolt could be a cracked sleeve. Dont panic cuz these things are repairable without going poor...
i have checked all boots and tubes already they all are fine, hpop is full of oil and no oil present at tailpipe.so maybe idm? if idm goes can that overload cylinders with fuel? because that is really what i have goin on here, either too much fuel or not getting a cpl cyl to fire up.....?Thanks blackbetty
Golfer tks for the input...I just got done checking injectors via an ohms test on each, and they all read 3.2 ohms, the turbo is only about a year and a half old had it replaced with a brand new Garret.so if you think injectors as the cause why would i get the consistent reading on all? Or would this type of test not rule out stuck(open)injectors? Also i have no blowby in engine????? I am stumpped.
wow very informative! thank you Golfer,i,m putting back together now and wii attempt one last hail mary to see if it runs right,or else it,s going to shop tomorrow for a buzz test for starters. And omg i,m concerned about the one uvch i replaced because it was a freaking Dorman! Just my luck.......keep you all posted.
