Any way to soften the suspension of my 1 ton? Silly question I know. I understand that a lifted 1 ton truck will not ride like a Caddy but my buddies 2012 F250 gasser seems to ride pretty smooth.
I plan on taking out some lift and adding track bars soon, I dont think that will help soften up the ride just athrowing that out there. If there is any way to keep from snapping my spine when I hit bumps I may be interested in it.
Do the coil overs in the newer trucks ride any smoother? and are they a b!tch to convert over from the leafs? I figure its a time consuming job but not sure what it is on the scale of ability.
Before going too crazy (read spending a lot of money), you could try upgrading your shocks. A couple of good options are Bilstein, Icon, Fox, King, and RaceRunner. I have a friend on 8" of lift who swapped his white body shocks out with a set from Fox and it made a noticable difference in the ride quality.
No worries man. I wasn't sure if changing only the shocks would make a worthwhile difference, but it definitely did on my friend's truck. If you're running the same wheels in your avatar pic, you're probably maxed out as far as a tire / wheel combo, but he recently got rid of his 37's on 20's and replaced them with 37's on 17's. This made a nice improvement also (more tire and sidewall).
The only wheel change I will be making is putting on a set of factory alloys I bought, just waiting to finish the paint work.
I dont plan on getting any bigger rim size. Maybe 305s when my 285s run down. But I am also on a mpg quest so I might scrap that idea.
No, strictly for axle wrap. I cant hit full throttle from a dead stop. I know that is not going to do anything to ride quality, like I said just throwing that out there.
And OBSWIZ I will start hunting down 05+ axles and if I have any questions or need parts I will let you know. Thanks for the help guys!
I tow my camper. And I dont "gun" it every time, I have a Camaro for that if the mood strikes. What I WOULD like is for my truck not to violently shake when I give it more then 3/4 throttle from a stop. And how I drive MY truck is not really of your concern. And I'm sure that I'm the only one who has ever tried to give my PSD full throttle.
Maybe my truck just isnt as cool as your '89 that doesnt twist the axle upon take off.
Not really looking to argue with you about this, so if you have nothing constructive to add (and so far you haven't) I dont need your comments.
didnt mean to aruge " just throwing it out there that my 89 doesent" but if u dont want help then be my guest and go punch it off lights and break stuff
If you have rear leaf springs with tall blocks you either do not have much power or very limited traction or you may not realize they are wrapping. I bet we stick a camera under there during a WOT launch that axle is rotating upward. All leaf spring setups do it given enough traction and tq. But that point is rather moot as its his setup and it is wrapping by his observation.
How much money are you willing to put toward this. I think that is something that will tell you what can be suggested. At the very top for ride in the front you have axle swap and 4 link. At the bottom to keep your height would likely be OEM X code springs and a 5" hanger kit. In the middle would be some ICON or Deaver and blisten or ICON shocks. In the rear you have a few options as well. I say give Cary a call or email (OBSWIZ on here) and talk it thru. He is a straight shooter and will tell you the best option in his opinion even if he can not sell you a thing.
How well would a shackle flip work at eliminating axle wrap?
On my 2000 7.3L Excursion, I've got a two inch block stacked with a four inch block. I get a nice shudder at 3/4 throttle and good wheel hop with full throttle take offs. I saw you talking about one up offroad's traction blocks and how they really hurt ground clearance. I feel if you aren't worried about ground clearance, you have no use for a lift besides aesthetics. So that doesn't sound like a good option. Lift springs are another option, but from my understanding that will hurt ride quality and still be susceptible to axle wrap.
From what I have read, a shackle flip sounds like an easy, cheap, and effective way to ditch my 4" block and help eliminate axle wrap. Could you go over the pros and cons of shackle flip on these trucks?
TARM- I dont want to go too crazy with money on it quite yet. I have been putting my extra cash into getting the engine to good running order and I still have my paint to finish as well as the interior. I just want to get my ducks in a row and start collecting parts for the suspension as that is the next project I want to tackle, I hope by mid summer to have it done. I will probably start out with new shocks and go from there.
Since I refuse to pay full price on anything I have to start getting parts early.
I've been told to PM you for a solution. What spring/block setup should I use to keep the 6" lift my skyjacker kit gave me? I'm more interested in flex, off road capability, and ride quality than towing or load capacity.
Would the CV drive shaft correct the shudder issue? There is no vibration under normal driving conditions. I'm guessing under acceleration, the axle wrap is changing my pinion angle, which causes the vibration? Wouldn't it be better to address the axle wrap itself rather than its effects?
Why specifically do you not suggest a shackle flip for street use?
