Hey guys, im in the process of building my wrecked 1996 f350 Powerstroke,
and as i removed and installed the fuel tanks to sand and paint the frame, i had to replace the rear tank due to a pin hole. Well, I removed the rear fuel sending unit/sump and there is a plastic screen attached to the the fuel sump line, basically the prefilter. Well, it crumpled to pieces from age and brittleness. Where do you get this Screen at????? Im scaird to try ford, i called Oreillys just to price the whole fuel sending unit assembly with sump, and they show it not available..... Question is, where do you get the screen or build a screen, or where can i buy a fuel sending unit/sump assembly for my PSD!???? The rear tank is just the standard steel tank.
And if someone knows where i can get just the screen, that would be great. My fuel sending unit works fine, Im just assuming that you have to buy the whole sendingunit, pickup tube assembley to get the prefilter......
Unless you feel like pulling the tanks again in the near future forget the screens, the current fuel blends for some reason kills'em quick.
Use some 3/8 SS hydraulic tube and a couple of compression fittings to extend the pick up tube, add a frame mounted fuel filter and that's it.
I pulled 2. Tanks 97 95 both didn't have screen. Pulled my 92 sd 460 tank an had pump an screen. I don't think you need one if you do want one make one with stainless steel screen an a ss. Hose clamp. Never rot
I think i can splurge $35 for the suction screen if its still available from Ford, or i will try the link posted in the prior posts. Seems like everytime i go to Ford to get OEM parts for this truck, they are already discontinued..... I did find a New Old Stock assembley on ebay, but they wanted $300 for that. I will do that if i have too, but thats last resort. I am just surprised that its not more readily available at aftermarket retailers like Oreillys and such...... And for clarification from the previous posts, the screen is on the suction tube side, its a prefilter, not a fine filtration, but enough to keep the big chunks out or from plugging your suction line. The return line has the typical Orange rubber sock with the slit that Ford uses on gas and diesel applications.
those look like the same as my 06 ,, when I dropped my tank it had a screen installed in the pickup and second one floating around in the tank for the pick up lol
I doubt I can find it but I will look for it this am
filter the return would lead to all kinds a problems ,, ours even have a bypass if the pick up screens become clogged ,,
imagine if the return became plugged:doh:
When I did an F26 E tank in my sig truck I left that whole screen and umbrella off iirc, also extended the return and pointed it away from the intake and tossed the little red tit. That alone gave me an extra 15 ponies, dyno confirmed too.. ; )
Yes sir, I left mine off too and extended the pick up tubes when I changed to the 38 rear and new front tank, I installed a frame mounted water separator as well as dual frame mounted filters, planning the switch to electric fuel soon.
I also posted the photo of the line tools in case anyone else is working with their tanks, they just make the job so civilized.
