5R110 Problems

Alright I swapped a used trans with 70K into my 08 6.4. From the Start the trans always seems to take off in 3rd gear, wont shift up or down and the TC never locks up. It throws the code P215b, says something about the output shaft speed. If i clear the codes, it take off normal but then starts to act funny right about the time it wants to shift then throws the same code and goes back to 3rd gear. Now the trans is gurenteed to to be good, I beleive the guy but id like to figure this out because i really dont want to pull it back out and go through all that hassle again because its kind of a b*tch. Any help or suggestions would be great, im kinda lost here and considering taking it in to a shop and seeing what they tell me, Im just scared they are goin to say its bad even if its not just to get me to have it rebuilt.

Re: 5R110 Problems

Any other codes set?
What happened to the previous trans?
Do you have access to a scan tool to check the reading from the VSS and OSS?
If there's no other codes set, do you have a known good TCM you can swap in to try?

Re: 5R110 Problems

That is the only codes its throwing, at first it was throwing another vehical speed sensor code but it quit doing that. Cant remember which code it was. The previous trans took a dump, was getting weak then took it to check cows one day and the snow got a little deep and I melted the clutches together without getting it hot, reverse and neutral were both forward gears. No I dont have access to ascan tool or another tcm.

How does that help me? Would a solenoid stuck open burn the piss out of the fluid? I could smell the burnt fluid from in the cab and I only had first gear. None the Less, That trans is gone and I need to get this one figured out. I need my truck and some helpful input would be great.

How did you melt the clutches and burn the fluid "without getting it hot"??

Seriously though, if that's the only code is has you need to get the VSS and OSS checked on a scan tool to make sure they're both in spec. If they are, then you replace the TCM.

I Wish I knew, Trans temp never got above 150 or 160, I was closely watching it like I always do. It was getting tired already, a few to many runs in the hot EX Race. But I was looking today and may have found the problem. The sensor on top of the output shaft, possibly the output shaft speed sensor? was plugged in but not locked. I took the sensor out, and both ends are clean but for some reason it just wont slide far enough in to lock even with a large amount of force. The connection slides together but only about 3/4 of the way. Goin to order a Output shaft speed sensor and see what happens. This is really pissing me off Already. I wish I could afford to just take it to ford, but I know how that would turn out with the way our dealerships are around here. . . . . . .
