Hello all, newer to this site so my apologize if this is posted in the wrong area or already answered else where. Recently I purchased a 2005 Excursion limited(been looking for a nice one for over a year) with the 6.0 powerstroke diesel. I have never owned a diesel and my cousin which is a machanic said once you get the diesel "ich" you can't let it go. Well I got to come home from Afghanistan for two weeks over the holidays and got to drive my new truck, and I "got the ich". I installed a 2 stage AFE intake, MBRP Cat/muffler delete turbo back exhaust, and the SCT touch screen wireless tuner from River City Diesel. I LOVED the power and smoking the rice burners even with my 40" tires. But I've been reading in Deisel Power about some 6-700HP daily drivers and was thinking about going for something like that. My question is I see a lot of people talking about Cummins engine swaps. Would my money be better spent on buying a cummins and getting it all built up and doing an engine swap or just building up my 6.0 to get the HP I am looking for. My cousin told me that there are many problems with the 6.0 so if I am going to sink that much money into an engine I just want it to be powerful AND reliable. I'm new to all of this so don't scold me if this is a stupid question, hell right now I am googling what Transmission my Excursion comes with...lol..Any help on a build would be great and if there are any Machanics or shops that is close to Cincinnati Ohio, I'm looking for a builder.
Thanks for the quick reply. Is it an easy swap, do most of the diesel engines fit other applications, or is there some serious work for a shop to do moving engine mounts and what not? New to all this, so sorry if stupid questions but why the 5.9? Wouldn't a 6.7 or bigger be better? From looking at your Dyno results, you know what your talking about. How much would something like this run me? 10-15-20K? Thanks for your time and help.
If you able to do the swap yourself, it can be done for under $10k (depending on the price you pay for the motor and what goodies you add). If you're paying a shop to do it, there is a ton of labor involved so l would expect to pay about 80-100 hrs in labor with most shop rates being $80/hr +. Bean had done a lot of swaps and I would certainly recommend him if you want someone else to do it. He has done some 6.7's too.
Usually a Cummins swap runs about 10k 5 for the motor and 5 for the adapters wiring and such, but that is not a built motor. So I would say 5k for the base motor and add from that the power you are wanting to attain.
But there are some very fast 6.0's use the search key and you will see some insane power being made. The 6.0 is a good platform just has some crappy components added to it like most modern motors.
The 6.0 can be a powerful motor and 600 horsepower is deff doable but can't ever go wrong with a cummins. 6.0 can be built into a great and fun motor but it takes some money. I'm not too far from cincinatti and do alot of 6.0 work here. If your interested into doing some work feel free to pm me I'll give you my number and we can discuss further. By the way your tranny is a 5r110 and very nice ride you have.
