Using a 4r100 for towing. With out pulling the trans, what upgrades can/should be done? i.e Transgo shift kit or Transgo tugger kit?
I have already put a bigger cooler on.
Cheers Colin.
So Mark, none of the programers help the auto survive? Here in Australia everybody says the Edge Evolution programer in tow mode helps the auto.
Is that not true?
Also are the shift kits a waste of money as well?
Cheers Colin.
I think some of the shift kits can help. It is my opinion that none of the tuners will help with transmission life. But that's just one engineer's opinion.
Mark what do you think about the BTS trannys? have you ever been inside of one? Im just curious as to what you thought about it if you had....I realize your probably one of the more qualified people on this site when it comes to trannys...
Ok... i am curious as to what goes on in there...is it the better pump? better or more frictions and steels? I dont think he is putting better shafts in it.... but his trannys are holding well over 700hp? i just wander what kind of majic is realy going on in there when he builds them.. or is it all in the converoter and VB to make it last under high hp
I got a quote on getting a kit for building a different transmission. The formula goes something like this.
1. Better TC with less slip and keep it locked up as much as possible to keep the heat down.
2. About 30% more holding area in the clutches by installing more steels and frictions, usually thinner to make them fit.
3. About 30% more pressure on the clutches at any given load. #2 and #3 combine for just about double the clutch holding capacity.
4. A trans shift kit so that it shifts faster, with less slippage in a given clutch per shift.
However, the engagement is a lot rougher and if the shifting computer did anyting to synchronise the clutch speeds before engagement, you can throw that out the window. So some of the 'firmness" you might feel is actually caused by clutches coming together at the wrong time. Some of the need for billet components comes from rough shifting too.
5. Replace any parts that are prone to outright breakage.

All it does is modify the signal to the EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid. It supposedly increase the pressure change whenever the pressure is increased, but doesn't affect the steady state pressure. That's what I've read elsewhere, but I don't have confirmation from Banks.
It won't go into my trans because I believe the most reliable configuration is stock. I do not modify my trucks, they are used to pull and haul things. I value reliability above speed. In my opinion, and I could demonstrate it in engineering terms, modifications make it less reliable.
I don't know enough about shift kits to be able to recommend one.
I have used Sonnex products with good results.
