is this something that can be done at home? im wanting to rebuild my e4od to have as a spare. any special tools needed? not even sure what questions i need to ask  any insight is greatly appreciated! thanks
For the average guy it can be done at home, you do need at least one clutch tool that you can make or build if you can't borrow one.
What tranny are you building? It is best to take one that you know the history of, one that was for the most part working but slipping or something that you know to be in good shape.
Buying a core and building it is not a good idea for the home builder. We just do not have enough experience to recognize bad parts or a bad case.
If you are taking your tranny and freshening it with updates, no problem you will do a great job.
Haha sorry about spelling... Well the guy I am buying parts from has built a couple of these trans before and says he hasn't had a problem with them.. I just don't want to get robbed at this price
If yours is still an original '92 trans (I'm guessing the year by your sig), you should consider buying the upgraded front pump too. The newer pumps have more capacity to keep the line pressure up. If your trans has been replaced at some point, it may already have the bigger pump. Look at the first two characters of the engineering number on the face of the pump. A "F8" indicates the newer pump. A "F5", "F1", or "E9" are the older style.
So I have a Question for the been there done that guy. I have a 6/96 powerstroke with a burnt up transmission.. got HOT. highway speeds in low range for many miles.. so i got a 4r100 out of a 04 the cases are different. i checked the part numbers against e4od and they are seemingly the same. can i swap the guts effectively?
not positive, but i am pretty sure the 04 used the 5R100 trans.
