Steering "dead" zone, then truck rips sporadically.

Some background, steering gear box went bad a few months back. Replaced it. Everything seemed fine. Few weeks later when coming out of a turn (only lo-speeds, never cruising) when straightening the wheel I'll have what I can best describe as a 'dead spot', then suddenly it'll catch and just rip the truck to one side. I can try my best to keep the truck straight, but it'll keep yanking one way or the other. Then; randomly, all will be fine.

Any ideas? This is my first truck, let alone anything bigger than a small car.

Was wondering if there's a way to make adjustments to the steering gear box? Perhaps ball joints or tie rods may be bad?

All the more reason to upgrade the suspension on the truck too.

FWIW it's a 2000 F250 XLT 7.3PSD with 136,2xx miles.
