I'm sure this has been covered some time in the past, but I have not been able to find what I'm after. I do not have the $4000 for a built tranny from someone. I do however, have a father in law that builds trannies for a living, and a can get his pricing for alot of the parts. What I'm wondering, is what are the best parts from all the stock trannys, I do plan on buying a billet input shaft, and cryo'd intermediate and output shafts. I'm also curious about a shift kit vs. valve body. Is one the better way to go? I'm also buying a billet converter for it. Also, who makes the best clutches for these? The trans will be going behind a 400+hp 12 valve Cummins. Any input would be appreciated.
BTS takes a lot of the stock parts and has them custom machined and heat treated to meet his specs. I dont think he sells the parts alone but you could call him and ask.
That's the kind of info I am after southmike, also I read about the 5r110 OD planetary being better, as well as the drum from an E4od. Anyone know about those parts?
It took between $1500-2000 in parts for the ones that I have done, converter and planetary choices causing the variance in cost.
For sub 500 hp I would suggest the upgraded input shaft, best converter you can get, BTS valve body and upgrade to all steel planets and use the suncoast master kit for clutches unless you can machine the drums and plates to put in extra factory discs.
Billet input. Steel 6 gear planetaries from 4r100, I busted forward drum twice, one hardened, might look into one of those. Alto clutches kolene steels. Transgo shift kit. There are many "little" tips and tricks. Including how tight to set your clutches, hole size in valvebody, what springs to run in the valvebody all that stuff.
