Ok I'm new to the forums but not powerstrokes.
The problem is when I switch to extreme 140 horse the truck pours out black smoke (smoke is normal I know) but it is extreme and boost pressure falls off to arround 4 psi at wot, looses power and makes a terrible noise which I believe is coming from the injectors almost sounds like they are bottoming out however if I let off the throttle just a little bit the turbo spools up to 28 and throws you back in your seat, smoke is reduced to what I consider reasonable. I'm not sure if the problem I'm having has to do with the chip, turbo, hpop, or injectors themselves.
2000 7.3 with 240k mi, Turbo replaced at 99k with oem by previous owner
I installed a ts 4 position chip 2 years ago my ex bought me for christmas.
I guess thats what I need to find out, How would I test hpop pressure while operating. Does the truck have a high side pressure monitor that I can check through obd2 stream?
Does hpop drop off explain excessive smoke and lack of boost?
when I say excessive smoke I don't know how to explain it but more smoke than I've seen from any truck besides a cummins with a boost dump
I was hoping to wait until after I upgraded the turbo, went to dual hpops, regulated fuel return with new injectors for the custom tunes also considering water/meth injection which I have heard is a terrible idea with most chips unless custom because of issues with advancing timing
I have access to my buddies snap on computer with data stream and am going to run the test monday when we both have the time.. he told me the icp sensor goes bad alot and data stream may give you a bad pressure reading.
Yeah the snap on scanner will do the trick. I would suggest sending off the chip also and getting it re burned. Its not a big deal because with most tuners once you pay to have it reburned that first time you get free re burns from them after the fact.
I just posted a new thread probably unrelated but my turbo is damaged (chips in compressor wheel) this may have a little to do with the lack of boost lately. I am interested in fixing both problems at the same time, looking into a turbo upgrade cheap. I know that sounds idiotic but I am broke because of a custody case and only want to fix the turbo to prevent further damage...
Warning......... I would steer clear of running the TS 140 tune if it makes horrible sounds. With that being said I would steer clear of any tune making horrible engine noise. Get some new tunes on that TS chip. Try Gearhead, Power Hungry, Beans Diesel to name a few. They are all vendors who help support the site and have a good reputation for having good tunes.
Just checking you have heard other open element intake trucks before eh?
To a first time user the turbo will make all kinds of new burping, farting sounds...aka turbo stall, think big truck air brake...not surge which is more like a pfft pfft pft of a pressure cooker. Hammering on a cold engine , air in fuel etc will also bring out strange sounds. And i have no idea what the sound of a stock injected truck would sound like if the chip was accidently burned for 238 hybirds etc.,,
I believe it was an object strike. When I bought the truck it had 170k, the original owner had a K&N drop in filter since the truck was new, replaced the turbo at 98k with extended warranty. I soon after removed factory air box and added a 4" cone because snaps on airbox were broken. I believe it is relatively new damage since I have only been experiencing boost issues for a few months. It looks to me like the blades are all worn and a chip on 4 maybe a tiny chip on a 5th but wear from dust from bad filter whole life and more recently small debris got picked up when cleaning the filter while in a hurry. I am redesigning my intake and building a new airbox this weekend will post pictures of damage and of new intake when I complete it.
For a tuner, would it be best to get with someone close to home so in the future a meet for live testing is practical? Does anyone even do that?
I'm in Omaha and am not sure of the guys around here.
We have 2 dhra shops that I know of, Husker diesel and Diesel specialties
anybody know anything about those guys?
I have no idea what the tunes on my chip are. I expect to be called a dumbass for this but the chip was purchased used from someone and given to me for christmas 3 years ago.
I don't run it in the 140 setting because of the issues. I was simply wondering if I was the only person with this problem, if so possibly custom tunes burned in for a different setup than mine. Now that I know this is common to the ts I will simply get mine burned by someone to an updated program. Unfortunately I have the older ts 4 pos chip.
Its all good man, you didn't know-- now you do, so just get it fixed.
Send the chip out for new tunes. Be sure to follow the instructions and give all the information needed when you send it in. If the motor runs well stock, you will be amazed at how well it runs when the chip comes back.
I can assure you it is an injection noise, I will try to record it and post to youtube and share the link.
I don't know how well the sound will turn out on my phone camera but I'll try.

Does it sound like a bad internal rattle as you accelerate rapidly?
If any sounds you hear is not a normal sound a 7.3 Powerstroke would make you better refrain from making that sound. If you say it is an injection noise you may be correct. There is such a thing as too much timing and too much pulse width.
All this has to do with injecting too much fuel at the wrong time.
yeah I posted in my other thread about my turbo. I read codes tonight : overboost condition, injection pressure not as expected, injection timing not as expected, vehicle speed sensor out of range, and a few others. I need to get that thing burned with some custom tunes. I only need advise on who to go with.
Is it a good idea to go with someone local or in my region to do custom tuning on the dyno?
I think it is early injection and too much fuel dropping hpop pressure.
No middle man needed. Go straight to the source when getting tunes for your chip. Below are some links for some awesome tuners. Explain to them what style chip and how many settings. Next tell them the year, make and model of you truck. What transmission auto or manual. What mods have been done to the truck ie. engine power mods, lift, tire size. Last they will need to know the PCM calibration code. These tuners have done extensive testing on the tunes they write. Over the years of writing tunes and testing them on the road and on the dyno they have tweaked them and revised them to the fullest extent to give ultimate economy and performance.
Before making any decision on any tuner call them and talk to them about your needs and concerns. Make your own educated decision on the best information gathered. Note: Some of these guys have full time jobs and some do this as full time jobs so when calling them remember they are always busy at work. Don't get discouraged because someone does not call you right back. After getting your chip back if some of the tunes need a tweak in shifting or fueling speak up and get it adjusted. They will make it right for you. These guys know there stuff when it comes to tuning. They have some of the highest horsepower tuned powerstrokes out there. Yes there are other tuners out there and I only mentioned a few of them by popularity and reputation. Make a decision and pick one. http://www.gearheadautomotiveperformance.com/ http://www.gopowerhungry.com/ http://www.beansdieselperformance.com/ http://www.tyrantdiesel.com/ http://www.swampsdiesel.com/
You also want to look at fuel pressure under load. low pressure/volume will cause all sorts of weird noises, HPO readings, boost issues and smoke. 55-65PSI under load. Pressure at idle needs to be the same but just because it has pressure at idle DON'T assume the pressure is there when you step on the skinny pedal.
ya the boost is steady at 22 psi under full load but datastream icp reading bounced all over the place...
