Just got this truck not to long ago. I am noticing a kind of thump noise when i pull away from a stop. I can feel it in the seat almost. All the u joints are good, i kinda of half ass tie the axle in to eliminate spring wrap. I have actually dangled myself from the spare tire with a strap under the truck and had the wife stop and start a few times(now that's trust) and it seems like its coming fro the diff. Its doesn't sound like hard part failure in the diff, but i could be wrong. Are these diffs typically noisy? Is this even something I should be worried about?
Thanks
Brake sticking and then "un-sticking" on launch? Try this - pull away, then let it COAST to a stop; DON'T touch the brake pedal. Then launch again, and see if you still get the thump.
It sounds like the slip joint in the driveshaft, if you have one. Mine got so bad, I thought my differential was gone. I greased the slip joint and it all went away. Thats what I would try first.
sorry guys not familiar with the driveline on these trucks. still learning about the driveshaft part but know most of the truck well. but whats the slip joint
I occasionally experience a similar problem... I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on here that it has to do with the transmission and is a normal occurence.
On every vehicle with live axles the drive shafts have to be able to extend and retract so they dont bind when the axle moves through its travel, as well as when axle wrap occurs.
The drive shaft has a set of male and female splines that slide in and out of each other to allow it to extend and retract. Some vehicles do this inside of the output housings on the trans or the transfer case. The male part of our drive shafts has a rubber coating on it and the female is steel.
When the slip joint dosent have enough lube it will stick on acceleration while trying to resist the axle wrap that is happening, then release causing a small thump feeling.
In my experience the blue grease that ford sells holds up longer than other multipurpose greases.
I tried the coast to a stop thing. still does it. Then i pulled the driveshaft to check the slip and stub. It looked goodbut i greesed it and put it back in. Still does it. Gonna pull the diff apart to rebuild the pozzy and check for any anomallies this weekend i hope. Might just be somthing i will have to deal with. Thanks for the ideas fellas
