Looking at picking up a new rig soon an its between these two rigs the Ford 6.7 and Dodge 6.7... I like the dodge because of the manual trans but if the Ford's auto is strong enough...
Obviously looking to mess with the performance so the auto worries me.
Will deleting all the emissions trash hurt me... legally??
What kinda mileage can I expect out of both of these rigs?
Im a Ford man, but Ford's recent choices in diesel engine after the 7.3l leave me very wary of the 6.7
You'll have more power out of the Ford from the get go. Seems like the new ford 6.7 is a good engine. If you are still worried about them, I would hold off for another year to determine reliability.
Not to mention the new automatics are much stronger and more reliable now than they were in the past.
The dodge is a good truck, sorta. Coworkers 07 dodge 2500 ctd dragged the trailer home the other night cuz my 11 dmax wouldnt go over 25mph...something wrong with it obviously...his truck pulled it so easily you couldnt even tell it was back there...if the new chevy is more powerful than the ford well..then...the 6.7 will pull harder. At least in IL it does. Peak hp is lower but it seems to make that lower hp rating from idle to 70mph!! Im pretty impressed with the power those trucks make. Even though IM a ford guy.
If they still have the same front ends and brakes the 2000 models had I'd stay away from the dodge. We were putting new brakes and realignments every 26000 miles. Glad we only had 4 of them. The 24 valve blocks cracked on all for of them. I got a divorce and didn't have to buy the pos's anymore.
I appreciate your input but that is soooo arbitrary...there are tons of variables that affect a front end. Maybe the tires sucked? Maybe they did have problems as you say. Ill take your word for it. I put wheel bearings and brakes on my truck every year and I dont think its a pos, fwiw.
if your gonna add horsepower id go with the ford auto and get a good tuner that can tune the tranny too. there is a reason they wont put a manuals behind 800 lbs of torque factory. i love my old manual but i hate putting clutches in. and those handy dual mass flywheels! junk....
Hmm... All valid points i guess... Went and test drove the 2011 XL F250 yesterday... It was nice, kinda felt like i was sitting lower in it that my 96, but the power was nice, would have enjoyed better gearing, couldnt rave about the 3.31-1 if i tried. I still need to go test drive the Dodge, and... Chevy if just for a comparrison.
If i do get a Ford itll be a used 6.7 because they wont be selling for 56k in a year... Also wouldnt buy a 6.4l not attracted to its "Gallons per Mile" thirst for fuel...
I've always heard that the only thing wrong with a Dodge is the Dodge part of it. I have friends with the Dodge and they absolutely love the Cummins! They just don't like the rest of the truck. Another thing I hear often is that the perfect truck would be a Ford with a Cummins in it... The only experience that I've had with a Dodge was a 99' Cummins, and the engine ran and ran.... The truck on the other hand was garbage. This is irrelevant though as the Rams have come a long way since 99'. The nice thing about the Ford is that everything is over engineered, this is why they are inherently heavier than the other trucks in their class. I would suggest getting underneath the truck and really looking at the hardware... You will instantly see why Ford trucks take so much abuse.
Well my experience with Ford is my '96 its only major flaw was the lack of power and transmission, also original axle, I will say that Ford has come along way in all those departments, Im just worried that the new auto has its limits that havent been found out yet because its premature, however, I'll keep checking out local dealers for a used 2011 to show up with the options i'm looking for.
For the most part i grew up gm, tried dodge and fords along the way, and will still buy what's best at the time of my purchase. This being said, i'am pretty much a ford fan. I tried another dodge back in 05 when ford was having 6.0 issues, and my opinion the newer line[03] and up are the best ever as for dodges. Bottom line, all trucks and their engines can have issues. I just bought an 11' ford, and i'am very pleased with it. The dodge was my second choice. Two thing's about your post. First; the dodge sites i hang on, seem to not favor the new line of manuals [g56]as reliable under overloded situations, or heavy modding. The new ho dodge, comes only as an auto, not with the manual.. Lastly, the last 3 times i have tried to buy a year old used truck[diesel], i was better off going new after i put the pencil to paper. Maybe your luck will be different...
JimTJr... Sitting lower as far as when im in the cab... in the 2011 the hood seemed to in a majority of my view, where as in my 96 I can up over the hood... definitly not suspension lol. Kinda hard to explain I just felt like the hood took up alot more visual space.
Hmm... soo your saying they are finally making auto's the "right" way?? So What made ya go with the new ford instead of the new dodge?
I'm also a firm believer in going with the best truck right off the bat, I have no brand loyalty, of course having a father that worked for Freightliner for 30yrs leads me to be a bit biased towards Diamler/Chrysler products... even now those dont exist... lol
I dont know if i would go as far as sayin their makeing auto's the right way, but they are leaps and bounds better then just a few years back. I'am a manual tranny guy, and likely allways will be.. I knew when gm deleted the manual option a few years back, the writeing was on the wall, so when it comes to a new ride, what can you do? I do know folks that are useing these newer trucks [all 3 brands] with auto's, hauling similar loads that i do [25/30,000lbs] and they are holding up. I have heard some issues on the dodge manual with case flexing and clutch issues, which was why i made the comment on buying a new one with a manual.. Keep in mind, those issues are on trucks that get modded/hot rodded, or see lots of heavy hauling.. Most truck buyers will do fine with the dodge manual under normal conditions.. As for the new truck purchase, we went ford because we felt it was better looking, more comfortable, and just plain overall liked it better then the dodge. Drivetrain wise, i dont think a man could go wrong with any of them, but i have seen all three brands in the shop with the hood off. Even that so called bullet proof cummins 5.9, more often then i would like to have seen, after buying a new one back in 05'.
manual trannys are caput after 2012, litterally wont be offered in vehicles, even for big rigs. everything is an auto now because manufacturers finally learned to make one(almost) after what...70 years!? the last 2 trannys ford came out have been amazing. and chevy has deffinetly held there own for that department. dodge... i drive a 2010 and its shifts like #?%! and its underpowered i think..but it doesnt have the extra motor that the 2011 has either. the interior is pretty cool but i think the seats are made for a 400lb dude, im 170lbs and my azz hurts after a few hours.(the tow truck).
the new exhaust brakes are cool though! LOL
You can't beat a cummins reliability history.... They are legendary, like I said before, the parts that fail are usually made by Dodge. Cummins has built an amazing reputation because they build the best diesels around. This new PSD may be just as good though, it really seems like they did their homework in the reliability dept. I mean you can beat how well this thing is bolted together, than there is the CGI block. Stronger than Cast Iron and lighter too! The heads are so bolted down they might as well be welded to the block! You will really like the Ford, if you worried wait a little until the little bugs are worked out. This is going to be one heck of a drive train. I feel like we have another 7.3 on our hands!
Not the least impressed with Chrysler/Dodge products. In build quality the ford blows it out of the water I would rather sacrifice a little reliability to get a better overall truck.
because the 68rfe is a piece of junk...once chrysler gets a real auto, I think they will start to slow down and stop production of the manual trans cummins's...
If it means anything to you. I love my 04.5 with the 5.9 Cummins and the six speed manual. However I just ordered a new Ford SD. I have always envied the Fords but was scared of the motors. Now that the 6.7 Scorpion motor is out and I see so few comlaints. The fuel efficieny of the Ford is WAY better than the 6.7 Cummins. The Ford also has things that are very usefull to me. The locking rear diff. the tailgate step and the AC cooled seats!
Now I guess I have to wait 12 weeks or more to get my new 2012
I just came from a 2010 Dodge Laramie Crew Cab Dually. Hopefully I won't bashed on for voicing my opinion of the new Dodge I had vs my new Ford. The new Ford 6.7 feels to have more power, but the Cummins felt like it had quite a bit more pull off idle. not sure if its in Fords torque management or just the fact that the inline 6 has gobs of torque down low.
The new Dodge interior, in my opinion is on par are above the new ford. The seats were more comfy and the padded dash was nice. Fords fit and finish might be a "hair" better inside, but they are both pretty great in my mind. My Dodge had heated and cooled seats and also a heated steering wheel. I could also roll down the windows in the cab of the Dodge without massive buffeting. More storage in the Dodge interior.
The Ford has better mirrors. I love the power mirrors on the Ford, its a great design. Fords exterior fit and finish seems better to me, although the rear wheel well lack of liners pisses me off.
Driving, the Ford seems to steer better. My Dodge dually rode way better, but then it also squatted more under load. That was a trade-off.
Why did I trade in a perfectly good Dodge for a new Ford? Well, I was tired of the duals and Dodge weight ratings on the SRW trucks wouldn't cut it for me. Also, I don't like the looks of the long bed/non-dually dodges.
I am plum content with the new Ford so far, but there are times I miss the ride of the Dodge. both are great trucks with a great engine and built very well. Both have nice solid front axles. As long as you buy either and stay away from the GM twins, you'll be a happy camper.
Hope no one takes any offense to my post, just trying to be objective about the two trucks. I was/am very happy with both. And many of my thoughts will be personal preference such as the interior and such. I must say that Dodge did really step it up in 2010. they are still nipping at the heels of Ford however. Ford is the best "all around" truck I think.
I noticed the lack of wheel well liners too. What's up with that. I was able to buy them for my 04.5 dodge and they work great since I live on a long gravel road. Not sure if I agree with you on the ride quality. I think the Superduty rides way nicer than the Dodge. Maybe you are strictly referring to duallies.
Ford if your listening please make us some wheel well liners! And a heated steering wheel would be nice too.
my buddys pops got a dodge 6.7 and man i tell u that that truck might just b specail or somethin but that is one of the strongest stock trucks ive rode in in awhile
My opinion is that the ford is all around the best truck, mainly because it has lots of power (I will refer to the video of a pair of 6.7s pulling 988 cat loaders) that is at least comparable to the cummins if not better, and for years and years the ford running gear, body, electrical, and pretty much everything else has been nearly indestructible, also I work in a shop and the American trucks that came in for more than just a service, listed in order of appearance, are Chevy, Dodge, and finally Ford. I hardly ever see a powerstroke come in for anything but general maintenance. Bottom line, if I wanted a new truck it would be a Ford.
yeah and a VW toureg TDI can pull a 747 (they did it on top gear), so whats your point?
all im saying was, that thing with the fords pulling the big loaders was a silly publicity stunt. The trucks were in low range so they had the gearing to their advantage. A 5.4/6.2 gasser ford superduty in low range would have pulled those Cat loaders just the same as the 6.7.
In my experience with Chrysler vehicles, since everything (jeep, dodge, & chrysler) all falls under Chrysler, the engines seem to be on par with Ford and GM but the overall drivetrain and electrical systems suck terribly. Now this is my, my relatives, and my friends and co-workers experiences dating from 1995 up through 2010 with both gas and diesel engines. It seems that for the most part the vehicles are ok up through the 100,000 mile range and if there is going to be any problems they usually develop before the warranty expires. Now you might say that this can happen with GM and Ford as well. Nevertheless, the problems that I have seen develop on the chrysler vehicles are just plain wierd and are not easy fixes and for the most part require dealer servicing. Whereas the problems I have seen with both GM and Ford is usually something common and at least servicable by any resonable mechanically inclined person who can do common service jobs that really require mostly bolting a replacement new part on and then they last to 200,000 miles. Then I would say that after that its anybodies ball game so to speak. So with that being said, I would have to say while I like the look of the new dodges I would have to agree with everyone else on here and say Ford makes the overall best truck. The cummins is probably by far the strongest engine of the three and take major modifications with the stock internals but I just believe the rest of the truck wont hold up as well as GM or Ford. Just my 2 cents and take it for what it is worth.
My friend has a 6.7 Ford and he loves it. Heard nothing but good things about hat motor and the truck itself
