Looking into doing a compound setup using my existing 38r. Im trying to find what turbos to look for to use as the atmospheric. im trying to find something cheap and used either in good shape or rebuildable. anybody have any ideas if a big enough turbo came on any big rig engines or equipment engines? looking for something along the lines of a s480 or gt47 80-88mm compressor ind.
Big enough turbo?? LOL That will be easy, finding that specific size shouldn't be too hard. But I do not know what engines were paired with what. Dump truck down the road just received a new motor and that turbo was a 3.6in or 4.0in, so finding one big enough is easy.

if doing compounds i would look at doing a smaller charger than that for instant spool up and low end. Think faster than a 38r or qssb with 250/100's. Your going to wastegate it anyways so might as well make it stupid fast.
maybe 38r .84 housing or s300 with a .88 housing feeding a kasb, s400
if your building compounds built it right.... when i was looking for my gt4294 i did a google search and found this ricer turbo company and ordered a garrett turbo gt4294 for like 1050 cam out to like 1150 with shipping and tax. what im saying is buy something new theres alot of deals out there and you have to do your research
Well I mean a s480 or the shwitzer s4t can be got for about 800-900 new which is where im leaning unless I can find a gt4718 for around the same but there new 1800-2000 everywhere.
so S480 with race cover for $1150. do i want the standard 96mm 1.32 exhaust or the 83mm 1.10 or 1.25 a/r
forced inductions has a s482 with 82mm compressor 92mm turbine with 1.10 a/r
basicly im going with the standard s480 for $900
or
s480 with race cover from forced inductions or bullseye for $1200
or
s480-82 with 96mm turbine 1.32 a/r from FI for $1350
or
s480-82 with 92mm turbine 1.1/0 a/r from fi $1400
christ i just saw FI now has a new budget garrett gt-88 , 94mm turbine 1.23 a/r (135lbs/min) new compressor wheel with 3rd gen turbine wheel for $1250..
Lets see
S480 standard 120lbs/min 80/96/1.32
S480 race cover - 125lbs/min 80/96/1.32
s482-82 race - 130lbs/min 82/96/1.32
gt88 - 135lb/min 88/94/1.23
gt4718 - 140lb/min 88/92/1.23 (just for referenct)
man all your guys help has really been amazing.. thanks.. Im going to try the Forced inductions GT-88 ill be sure to let you all know how it goes. wonder what hp is possible with the 250/100's i have.
it will be low smoke, but hell with 100's it would be low smoke with about any turbo. If you want a challenge take 400/400's, my big twins and try to make it street friendly. Twins and 250/100's are a waste of time IMO. I dont know if your amazing comment was sarcastic or not, but i am ASSuming it is. Most people with those injectors wouldn't mess with twins in the first place, let alone on a junk yard budget. Go with a 38r and run with it, less mess under the hood, same results and much cheaper.
those are still EASILY in the single turbo category. 66-71mm s300/s400 and supporting mods your talking 600hp with good streetability and tow friendly. Twins are nice, hell they are the only thing that make my rig driveable but i am still considering going to one of those new fangled batmowheel turbos just so i can get rid of junk under teh hood.
i just want to do compounds. im trying to figure out whats the best option on turbo with what im doing. 250/100's now and 300/200's later. wasting moneys the least of my concern.
ok so ive hashed out the plan. im ordering the GT88 from forced inductions next week. the trucks going to pa next month to get the injectors pulled and sent to swamps to upgrade to 300/200. at which time the compound setup will be fabricated. srp1 will be installed. Jonathon from swamps is coming up to pa to do some live tuning when its done. nice...
is that a typo? a gt88? as in much huger than charles 90 lb can stand a pop can up in the inlet gt55? i wasnt aware of a gt88, though i admit, im not turbo knowledeable.
GT88 is a Garrett turbo made by forced inductions. basically a gt4718 just like chuck was running 88mm compressor 94mm turbine. then they have the gt91 91mm compressor same turbine... hmm
charles had a GT47-88, thats why i thought it was a typo, that you had forgot to add the 47-XX to it.
