This past weekend I took off my 6inch lift and replaced it with stock F250 suspension. I now have a turning problem with my 315/75/16's on 16x10 wheels. My tires need replacing anyhow, so why not step up to a set of 20's? What in need to know is what can I clear in the neighborhood of tires, and how wide of a wheel? Oh yeah. truck is a 1999 F350 4x4 SRW.
I picked up a stock set of wheels yesterday with some good 285 BFG AT's for $200. I am gonna run those till I decide on a wheel and tire combo. I must say I hate the way my truck looks now though.
you could go 20's with some 33x12.5's. I think they look funny myself with a big rim and little tire like that but its your truck. I would go more for a 325/60-18 on some 18in rims myself. That would be a nice wide stance and still leave some sidewall. If you have to have 20's I would run at least a 35in tire so your gonna need a little lift.
Just had this discussion with a buddy today, he has 35s on 16.5s and wanted 20s or 22s. Problem is truck is only lifted 4" ('02 250) and he wanted either a 37 on the 20s or a 38 on the 22s to keep them from looking like goofy low profile tires on a full size 4x4. He's staring at going up to a 6-8" lift depending on wheels and tires, or going 18s and staying in a 35.
It's pretty hard to go over 33s on a leaf spring truck at stock height, and you need a minimum 3" hanger for 35s.
Yeah, if it was a decent quality lift, it probably did ride better.
Be careful on 18s.
Floatation sizes for 18s are expensive relative to the metric sizes and floatation sizes for 17s and under. Also, as the wheel gets larger, you end up with a shorter more rigid sidewall, so while it may handle better in cornering, the overall ride quality will suffer.
The '05-up trucks come with 275/70-18s and they run 32.8-33.4" OD by roughly 11" wide, that size is the cheapest way to get a decent quality 33" tire for an 18" wheel, but don't expect it to ride anything like your 285s on 16s.
