Ficm problem?

My 6.0 is running rough at idle. Ficm voltage is dropping from 48v to 42v then back up again. I swapped a good ficm to see if that was the problem but no change. Battery voltage is good and no loose wires that I can see. Is the PCM a problem or wiring harness? Any ideas would help.

Re: Ficm problem?

I would be looking into not only loose , frayed wiring. Also my entire charging system. Starting with my grounds. That's kinda odd that a second ficm would do the same thing. Did you check ficm#2 while it was on the original truck? It's not uncommon for people to swapp a bad ficm for a bad ficm.

Re: Ficm problem?

I just had a mechanic run a diagnostic on my 06' this morning. My FICM was showing ~50V and would drop a few volts, but not much. He said if the FICM was bad it would be dropping to ~30V. I would suspect a bad injector. When he had my truck plugged in he disabled one injector to show me what a bad injector would do and the truck ran really rough.

Also, if you swap your FICM don't you have to reflash all the modules to get them to recognize each other? I didn't think they were all plug and play.

Re: Ficm problem?

FICM should NOT be below 46V. Also, they can be bad even when they show the proper voltage.

Re: Ficm problem?

Speaking of voltage, what should the output voltage from the alternator be?

No, you can use any year FICM on any truck. If you buy a brand new FICM from Ford, it needs to be flashed though, since it's "empty" new.

Black smoke don't mean it's broke... it means your tuning sucks!

Do you have to have it "flashed" in the truck or can it be off the truck? Cause if it has to be in the truck I have a major task ahead of me just getting my truck to ford. Another question would be can you just get the FICM rebuilt, or would it be smarter to just buy a new one?
