Loose Steering/wandering

Hello all,

I have a 2000 F-250, CC, 149,000 miles, with 6.5" procomp lift and 37" Toyo's on 17" rims. When i bought the truck the steering was horrible and i figured it would be an easy fix.
I have replaced upper/lower ball joints, front sway bar busings and endlinks with energy suspension(rear sway bar bushings feel tight, track arm bushings and last but not least Just installed a Red Head steering box. All of this did tighten up the steering but there is still a slight wander and play in the steering.
The stock steering damper is blown, but from what i've read that should have any effect on lmy steering issues.

I have checked the tie rod ends and drag link to the best of my ability but i could see nothing wrong.
Any ideas to get my steering back to normal?

Re: Loose Steering/wandering

Mine needed wheel bearings at 140k. Wandered all over the road before I replaced them. If you still have play in your stering, it could also be the draglink.

Re: Loose Steering/wandering

The passenger side wheel bearing is new, but the driver side looked original. I have just noticed when i turn to the righti can feel/hear a slight grinding noise (Im guessing thats probably the wheel bearing??) The drag link seems tight, but i may not be checking it correctly.

How do i check the toe?

There is also a clunk (right under my feet). I have new leaf spring bushings from energy suspension that i will be installing this weekend, I'm thinking the old bushings may be playing a role in the wandering.

Re: Loose Steering/wandering

ball joints, wore out shock rubbers, leaf spring bushings, loose caliper mounts, wore out wheel bearing assembly letting the axel bounce inside,

if it does it turning its 1

if it does it over a bump its the rest

Re: Loose Steering/wandering

Based on the items I have replaced recently, and the fact that it happens over bumps, it sounds like I need to look at leaf spring bushings. Where can I get replacements?

Re: Loose Steering/wandering

i know a guy with a stock 99' SD and he had the same "clunk" under it and took it to the dealer 5 times with no luck they said they could seem to figure out what it was. When i rode in it it sounded like a broken bolt or loose something or other. Good luck

Yesterday I tried installing the new leaf spring bushings, but I could not get the driver side spring out. I couldn't lift the frame high enough to take sneak the spring out.
On a good note all 3 bushings on the driver side leaf spring and shackle looked perfect. I reinstalled everything and left it at that.

i traced all of the play in my steering to my new red head steering box, there is a good 2-3" of play in the wheel.
