Just an update for the 6.7 customers, we have flashed our shop truck with the Phalanx or Spartan tuner. I was done with a device we had in stock which was a production 6.4 unit. It required a firmware update, new license and then of coarse the tune. The tunes are beta, but the firmware and licensing will be what is used by the consumers down the road. I can say how many days to consumer release, as today was more of a test to see if the files and firmware would load and work correctly in a "consumer" type enviroment. All went very well and now Spartan is in the 6.7 tuning game! I will post test drive impressions after I get a few miles on it tonight, I told it will be much more powerful than the test files we flashed into the truck a few weeks ago via laptop. Attached is the picture of the tuner loading into the truck(and yes it's really going into a 6.7 for those that doubt things).
Well the first drive was great, gotta be the best tune I've run in this truck to date. Transmission shifting is super fast and very firm, that's going to shorten up the quarter mile times a great deal. Fueling seems to be a bit more aggresive than the beta file that we loaded a few weeks ago at Matt's. The control Matt has of the torque converter makes this tune. I will put some miles on it the next few days, and report findings. It's nice to see that the 6.7 people will now have more options for tuning these trucks. Posted is a picture of the trucks info after the tune was loaded.
Comparing the tune to the H+S tunes I've have run and previous Spartan beta tunes(both of which dyno'ed at 464 and 468hp, not quit the 497hp advertised), I think this tune will truely break the 500 hp mark on this truck. Seat off the pants tells me if a flat out drag race it would run with a 275hp tuned 6.4 now. Spartan's "200HP WARHAMMER" tune is going to bring a war to the 6.7 tuning. Great job Matt this one really works. Going to try to get some time today and video a few runs if it's quite enough around the shop.
What are the warranty issues with using a tune like these? I asked a local dealer and he told me that some programmers will not leave a "footprint" in the computer...he said that they can not tell if someone had programmed the truck in the past.....but he said some programmers will leave proof that you have messed with the tune of the truck.
I don't expect this truck to be wty repaired off anything, it was modified with 39 miles on it(that's the distance from the dealer to the shop). The manner in which the truck is returned to stock makes a difference in hold easily the dealer or manufacture can see if the truck has been programmed. Yes, it would seem the better tuners are much less detectable, but to declare any of them are completely undetectable is a very big statement.
Based one the way this truck tuned, it would seem that it could be done like the way you would put two trucks on the same device previously. Just not sure if the index file for the 6.7 tunes would match the index file for the 6.4 tunes. Matt will have to answer that one, this was mostly a test to see if the consumer side of the software and tuner would do a 6.7 which it did. This truck was already tuned with Spartan tuning previously.
The first spartan tune I ran got almost 2 mpg highway better than the H+S that I ran the truck down to Matt's in NC on. My truck is lifted with 37" tires so keep that in mind. Prior to running Spartan's tuning, I tried DPF on TS MP8 and Bullydog GT with no change in mileage over stock(or not enough to notice anything). When I installed the H+S and went DPF off, it did seem to improve mileage slightly but I never really saw anything of a 1 mpg gain or inprovement(H+S doesn't advertise or claim mileage gains as there tuners are for off road use only). At no point did my truck lose mileage, except maybe when I lifted it and installed the tires, but that was done at 39 miles so I have no stock baseline.
That's great news! I ran a Spartan in my '10, and loved it, so i have been patiently waiting for this release. I do, however, have a couple of questions:
1) what type of boost are you running?
2) Is the pyro read on screen as the 6.4 versions?
3) You mention that the tranny shifts hard--is that a "bang" hard, or firm hard?
2) The Dashdaq is not completely ready for monitoring, the 6.7 trucks DO NOT have a pre EGT sensor from the factory so you either need to run a aux input to single the DD with EGT or do like H+S did. H+S rescales a EGR temp table and uses a sensor out of the DPF, mounts it in the right exhaust manifold and monitors(after download is installed) in that manner. I would think that would be the direction Matt would go also, as it requires the least amount of extra hardware be purchased. We built basic EGT sensor mounting plate kits and full EGR cooler delete with the EGT mounting solution built in for both types of EGT monitoring. H+S and Matt take a slightly different direction as far as coolant temp sensors and monitoring I/C coolant temp. H+S turns for the monitor so the sensor can be unplugged, Matt continues to monitor this water temp as it signals the PCM with intercooler water temp. We have built a coolant connection tube that will allow the relocation of the I/C coolant temp sensor for the Spartan tuning allowing the PCM to fuel in accordance with temp inputs from the I/C system.
3) Transmission shifts are firmer than the H+S shifts but not violent, just fast and firm like they should be.
I know yesterday Matt was working on DPF on tunes, he is hoping to have DPF on tunes up to 100hp in the device. As far as DPF off tunes, I know the test tune I ran from a month ago was going to be one of them. That tune had more power than the H+S tunes I'd run previosly, and improved the fuel mileage almost 2 mpg on my return trip from NC to CT. I don't know if the race "warhammer" tune is going to be standard in the preloaded tunes at time of release. I know Matt's got a couple tune between the two that I've already been running.
Just wondering if adding 100 horse DPF on will make it need to regen more or not? Just curious. Sure dont have to worry about that on my old 97, this new is another monster.
if your in the throttle, YES a lot more.... supposedly when your driving easy its about the same.... but i know mine regens a lot more even with just the mp8 on it...
Well thats my problem, i love seeing them chevys and really them dodges getting smaller in the rear view!
