cummins 12v mpg vs 7.3

Alright heres my question, does a 2500 club cab 4x4 12v 1998 12v cummins with auto trany get as good or better mpg than a 2001 4x4 7.3 auto super cab? both trucks fixed up comparably with about 400hp? and driven by the same person the same way?

Im in the position to help a buddy out with witch truck to get he does want the best mpg in a diesel truck

The cummins will do better. I still get 19mpg with mine, and its in a brick truck lifted on 35's.

In a straightforward, no BS test...probably about the same. Unloaded the Dodge, being built lighter should do a little better.

I have called for a MPG road trip with Dodges and Cheviies. Nobody ever takes me up. Wonder why not?

Re: cummins 12v mpg vs 7.3

My 12v gets around 17, the same truck with a 7.3 got about 14. 7.3 was 500 hp, 12v is way more.

Re: cummins 12v mpg vs 7.3

Dodge should get a little better, it has 3.55 gears and smaller tires factory anyway. Plus as Dave noted it is a lighter weight truck.

Re: cummins 12v mpg vs 7.3

sorta makes sense about the mileage. 7.3 is only 1.4 liters bigger than a 5.9. of course the dodge will get better mileage granted it doesnt have massive problems and real low gears. talked to aguy that was getting 26 with 3.55 gears about thsi time last yaer. you can get around 22-24 mpg with a 7.3 running 80 consistently with 3.08 gears though.

Re: cummins 12v mpg vs 7.3

In my experience a 12v will get 3-5 more mpg than a simular 7.3,towing
heavy even more.
